The WordPress program needs to be updated in time. It is best not to be too far away from the latest version, otherwise there is a risk of being hacked. Today I will talk about a simple way to upgrade WordPress

How to update wordpress

Why do you need to update?

Upgrading is a process that makes WordPress more perfect. Each upgrade is a supplement to the previous version. So be sure to update it in time.

Wordpress updates generally have two methods: manual and automatic.

The automatic update method is that the official will silently and automatically upgrade your WordPress to the latest version, and then send you an email to remind you. However, I have some WP websites that are not automatically updated. The specific reasons are Didn't delve into it.

If your website will also be automatically updated, then you can leave it alone and let it update automatically, but it is best to maintain a certain frequency of backups to avoid update errors. If your WP website does not automatically update WP, then update it manually according to the following method.

There are two manual methods. One is to click on the update prompt on the background.

I don’t recommend this method because I have tried it several times and it will turn into a blank page in the end. I won’t go, so I don’t recommend it. The reason may be a network transmission problem, resulting in the loss of wp system files. If you have clicked here to update and a blank page appears, just follow the steps below to restore it.

The other method is the method mainly introduced in this article, which is to manually upload wordpress system file updates.

Although the manual update method is a little troublesome, the process can be controlled. I always update manually.

The principle of updating is to replace the wp system files except the wp-content folder with new versions, and then enter the system to view. You need to understand this process to operate better.

Since there are many kinds of website spaces, the following uses the bluehost space website as an example to introduce the specific operation methods. Other spaces can also be referred to. The principle is the same

1. Website backup

As long as you perform any operation on the website system, it is recommended to back up the website first to ensure that it is foolproof and to make up for the situation. Refer to duplicator backup website

2. Download WP update file package and processing

Enter the download page of all official versions of WP and download the version that needs to be upgraded. For example, if you want to upgrade to 4.7.1, then download the 4.7.1 version zip Package the file locally and unzip it, then delete the wp-content folder, then select all the remaining files and compress them into a zip file

3. Upload the processed wp compressed package to bluehost Space and unzip

Enter the bluehost background-find the file manager-click to enter the root directory of the wp website you need to update.

After entering, click the upload menu in the upper left corner menu, select the ZIP compressed package processed and compressed previously, and open it to start uploading.

Wait for the normal time, about 5 minutes , there will be a prompt in the lower right corner that it has been completed. Click the link to return to the file manager

to select the uploaded zip file and right-click to extract it.

4. Check the website status and enter the background to view

After decompression is completed, refresh the website and check the website status to see if there are any abnormalities. Then go to the background to check. If you see a prompt that you need to update the database, just click the button to complete.
