Google has enhanced Android's security features with new measures specifically designed to combat phone call scams. These enhancements aim to prevent unauthorized security modifications during phone calls, a technique often used by scammers.

Scammers typically exploit built-in phone functions to gain control over your device during a call, using deceptive tactics to rush you into making hasty decisions. Google's latest feature restricts certain security actions when you are on a call with someone not listed in your contacts.

This in-call security measure is intended to stop scammers from remotely altering device settings to access private data. For instance, you won't be able to disable Google Play Protect, Android's security system that continuously scans for malicious apps, during an active call. This feature is available on Android 6 and later versions.

On Android 16 and newer, you cannot install apps from sources other than the Google Play Store or grant accessibility permissions during a call. Such permissions can be exploited by malicious apps to take over a device. Although awareness of these risks is growing, many users remain unaware of the potential dangers.

Google's Gemini Nano AI may be the perfect defense against scammers.

To counter screen-sharing scams, where scammers guide victims through harmful actions while monitoring their screen, Android will now prompt users to end screen sharing automatically when a call concludes. This feature is particularly beneficial for those who might be less vigilant, offering a simple one-tap solution to end the call and stop screen sharing simultaneously, thereby reducing the risk of fraud.

Additionally, Google is experimenting with an enhanced security feature for banking apps in the UK. This trial will alert users if they open a participating banking app while screen sharing with an unknown contact. This feature will be available on Android 11 and later devices and could be rolled out more widely following the UK trial.

To tackle impersonation scams, Google will introduce Key Verifier in Google Messages later this summer for Android 10 and newer devices. This tool utilizes public encryption keys to allow users to verify the identity of their contacts. By scanning a QR code or comparing numbers, users can ensure they are communicating with the intended person, providing protection against SIM swap attacks and other impersonation attempts.

If a contact's verification status changes, such as after a SIM swap, the Google Contacts app will notify you of a potential security issue. This is particularly useful as sophisticated scammers often use familiar contacts and names to deceive victims.

While these measures won't eliminate scamming completely, they will enhance safety for those who might not recognize the risks of trusting every contact. To protect yourself, always be cautious about sharing personal information, avoid downloading unknown files, and never allow strangers access to your device. While Google is working hard to thwart malicious attacks, your vigilance remains the strongest defense against scammers.

When setting an alarm in Google's Android Clock app, you can select ringtones, music from streaming music services, or downloaded audio files as the alarm, but that's not all. The latest features allow you to turn your own voice into an alarm to wake yourself up by saying anything you need to hear. Currently, this update is only available to Pixel users, but there are some ways you can bypass this limitation and create a self-talking alarm clock on other Android devices, such as the Samsung Galaxy series. The process is very simple. Select an alarm in the clock app or create a new alarm, record a voice message to yourself as the alarm tone, and then enable the alarm. This is a great way to remind yourself of the morning ro
