Onn 4K Plus Streaming Player: Walmart’s $30 Surprise
Shortly after this article was published, Walmart removed the product page of the Onn 4K Plus streaming player. However, a commenter from AFTVnews said they saw the device in a physical store, so you might be able to find it in some Walmart physical stores.
The Onn 4K Plus streaming player has now appeared on Walmart’s online store after it leaked in April. Although it's not available for purchase at the moment, for $30, it looks like it might be perfect for my room.
A few weeks ago, the community comment platform Home Tester Club released some early reviews in advance and accidentally leaked the device, and we only saw the Onn 4K Plus for the first time. The leaked information gave us some insight into this streaming player, but did not disclose the price or detailed specifications.
Walmart's latest Onn 4K Plus product page shows that it's priced at $30. More importantly, it also reveals the specs of this streaming player, which is much better than I expected.
The Onn 4k Plus features a quad-core Amlogic S905X5M processor with 2GB of RAM and 16GB of storage. Devices like the older Chromecast with Google TV tend to have some annoying issues when there is insufficient storage, so I really appreciate the 16GB storage capacity of this device.

I can spend hours on this.
1 I was also impressed to see that it supports Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos and comes with a voice remote – a must-have accessory for any Google TV device, in my opinion (I just wish I could get rid of that big and fat “free TV” button). Walmart even implements a Wi-Fi 6 connection, which should be slightly more reliable than wireless connections. Although the network cable interface would be better, I can accept Wi-Fi 6.
While these specs are great value for money, they are obviously not as good as the $100 Google TV Streamer or NVIDIA Shield. But I just need a good enough, durable, 4K-enabled streaming player in my room.
I need to clarify that I'm a long-time fan of Roku (and a half-hearted hate Google TV - sorry, but the interface of Google TV is a bit bad). I just couldn't stand Roku's growing, endless intrusive advertising, and no one could convince me to buy Amazon-branded devices, so I chose to endure Google TV. I might end up buying an expensive Apple TV box, but that would be my living room because I spend most of my time watching TV there.
Onn 4K Plus is currently displayed as "out of stock" on Walmart's website, and there is no news yet when it will be available. However, as my friend Ben Schoon at 9to5Google pointed out, Onn devices usually appear in physical stores before they are released online “officially”. So, I think I'll check it out at Walmart this weekend.
