You've heard of lockpicking, now let us introduce you to persuasion, the actual worst mini-game in Oblivion Remastered.

If you find yourself getting confused while trying to haggle merchants, or sway citizens and guards, don't worry, it's not just you - it's Oblivion tradition to encounter the persuasion mini-game and tear your hair out in frustration.

Although it may not seem like it, there is logic behind the mini-game, and strategies to 'win' at it. We've got a persuasion explainer below to help you get to grips with it, along with advice on how to win the persuasion mini-game.

Please note that this guide can be used for both the original release, and Remastered version of Oblivion.

Oblivion Remastered persuasion explained

To break it down into its simplest form, your goal in the Oblivion persuasion game is to select the 'action' (Admire, Boast, Joke, and Coerce) that a character has a positive reaction to when the rings (called wedges in the game) beside it are fullest, and select the action that a character has a negative reaction to when the rings beside it are smallest. You must pick all actions during a persuasion attempt, which is why you can't just ignore the actions that have negative reactions.

In the Remaster, you can also work out whether selecting an action is good or not by looking at the colour of the rings (red for a bad selection, green for good selection). But the colours aren't always available.

A persuasion attempt will end when you've selected all four actions, but you can take part in the persuasion mini-game multiple times for each character, but there is a finite limit, and you'll be cut off when the "You have reached the maximum Disposition for this character" message appears. From this point, you can bribe the character to raise their Disposition instead, but even bribing has its limit (and you need to be at Novice rank or higher in the Speechcraft Skill to bribe in the first place).

Oblivion Remastered persuasion explained

Also, keep in mind that a character's Disposition is always ticking down while you're taking part in the persuasion mini-game, so it's recommended to be as quick as you can!

Once a character reaches a high enough Disposition number (displayed in the middle of the persuasion circle) you can then haggle with them better, convince them of something, or unlock new dialogue options. But be warned - a character might attack you if their Disposition falls low enough!

Each character has a set reaction to the four actions: love, like, dislike, and hate. You can tell how a character feels about each action by hovering over it - a big smile means they love it, and a big frown means they hate it, with 'like' and 'dislike' falling somewhere in between. Remember, you have to select all actions during a single persuasion attempt, so you can't avoid the options that the character doesn't like. Instead, you should select that negative option when the rings by the action's name are smallest.

The rings also start at a random location each time you start persuading, meaning you can't do a test run and just reload your save to get it right the next time.

Each time you select an action while persuading, the rings will rotate one position clockwise. But if your Speechcraft Skill is at Apprentice rank or higher, you get an extra rotation.

Here are all of the Speechcraft Skill perks in Oblivion:

  • Novice - Can offer bribes to increase a person's Disposition.
  • Apprentice - Can rotate the wheel once for free in the persuasion mini-game.
  • Journeyman - Disposition falls 50% slower in the persuasion mini-game.
  • Expert - Loss of Disposition for 'Hate' reaction results is lowered from -150% to -100%.
  • Master - Bribes cost half as much.

How to win the persuasion mini-game in Oblivion

There are a few strategies you can use to 'win' the persuasion mini-game, but we're a fan of the 'quicker is better' method.

Here's step-by-step instructions on how to win the persuasion mini-game in Oblivion:

  1. Save before talking to a character.
  2. Start the persuasion mini-game and hover over all four actions to see what they love, hate, like, and dislike. You can take your time here.
  3. Reload your save, then start the persuasion mini-game again and quickly pick all four actions. Remember, the rings turn clockwise to the next action, letting you see what the next ring set-up will look like.
  4. If you run out of persuasion attempts and you can't raise a character's Disposition to where you need it to be, reload your save and try again.

In our experience, just selecting a fuller ring when it's on a good option, and selecting a smaller ring when it's on a bad option is more effective than trying to work out where the rings are going to land on the next rotations.

Oblivion Remastered persuasion explained

Yes, if you had more time, working out where the rings are going to end up would be the ideal strategy - but Disposition is ticking down! So there's not really any time to put your visualisation skills to the test.

Here's some tips to help with persuading:

  • Don't talk to someone with your weapon drawn, it temporarily lowers a character's Disposition (or do talk with your weapon drawn to lower their Disposition enough to get another attempt at the mini-game).
  • A higher Fame level helps raise Disposition naturally.
  • Bribe them instead - It's easier to spend gold, if you have a lot to spare.
  • Remember, try to prioritise speed in each persuasion attempt.
  • Pick the Imperial Race - Grants 10 to Speechcraft.
  • Pick Speechcraft as a Major Skill for your Class - The pre-made Acrobat, Agent, Bard, Healer, Knight, Pilgrim, and Thief Classes have it as a Major Skill as well.
