Pocket Casts Premium Subscribers Now Get Automatic Podcast Transcripts
Pocket Casts has added a valuable feature for its Plus and Patron subscribers: automatically generated transcripts for podcast episodes. While not every episode is transcribed, the app offers a clean and easy-to-use interface for accessing these transcripts on both Android and iPhone (version 7.85 and later).
This feature enhances accessibility and usability, making a subscription more attractive. However, there are a couple of important caveats. Firstly, transcripts aren't available for all podcasts; currently, Pocket Casts focuses on "new episodes from the most-followed podcasts," unlike Apple Podcasts which transcribes all episodes.
Secondly, access to automatic transcripts is a premium feature, exclusively for Plus ($3.99/month or $39.99/year) and Patron ($9.99/month or $99.99/year) subscribers. To view a transcript, simply start an episode and locate the "Transcript" button in the overflow menu. For convenience, you can also add this button to your main toolbar.
The transcript interface is designed for ease of use, offering full-screen viewing, search functionality with highlighted results, and easy copy/paste options. Navigation between search results is streamlined with convenient arrow buttons. Note that real-time highlighting to follow along with audio playback is not currently supported. Standard playback controls remain accessible at the bottom of the screen.
The benefits of podcast transcripts are numerous. They simplify the process of finding specific quotes, names, or key points. More importantly, they significantly improve accessibility for listeners with hearing or visual impairments. While major players like Apple and Spotify dominate the podcasting landscape, Pocket Casts' commitment to features like automatic transcripts makes its subscription a compelling option for dedicated podcast listeners.
