Clair Obscur: Expedition 33: A Turn-Based Combat Revelation

I wasn't expecting a game-changer, but Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 exceeded expectations. Surprisingly, this title transformed me, a staunch turn-based combat opponent, into a fan. The narrative, characters, environments, and upgrade systems are all excellent, but the combat system truly shines. For fellow turn-based skeptics, I wholeheartedly recommend giving this a try.

The core mechanics are relatively straightforward: execute attacks, build an AP meter for enhanced attacks. Each character boasts unique minigames to boost power and add strategic depth. However, the game's brilliance lies elsewhere.

The game masterfully blends real-time elements with turn-based combat. While not the first to attempt this (think Yakuza or Paper Mario), its integration is superior and more central to the gameplay. This blend manifests in three key ways:

Perfect Attacks/Defenses: Many special attacks feature quick-time events (QTEs). Successful execution (1-3 times depending on the move) significantly boosts damage, healing, or defense. Each move has a unique rhythm to master.

Dodging: This fundamental element demands precise timing to evade enemy attacks. Perfect dodges often reward bonus AP, providing a strategic advantage against challenging foes. Later, "jump dodges" enable simultaneous counterattacks.

Parrying: For the truly skilled, parrying allows perfect deflection of attacks (or entire combos) resulting in devastating counterattacks, turning an enemy's offensive into significant damage.

The system achieves a superb balance. While players strategize skill, weapon, and upgrade synergies during the turn-based phases, defense relies heavily on real-time reactions. This prevents skill selection from being the sole determinant of victory, offering a more accessible entry point for different player types. Despite the inclusion of QTEs, the execution feels incredibly satisfying. I cannot recommend this game highly enough.
