A wave of "toll-fee SMS scams" is currently sweeping across America. Many state governments have warned residents about text messages from unknown numbers demanding payment for allegedly unpaid tolls. The scam's credibility stems from the millions with payment accounts linked to license plate or RFID systems. If you don't have such an account, the message might try to convince you your license plate is linked to your phone number in a government database.

Apple's Messages app offers a simple defense against this and similar smishing (SMS phishing) attempts that rely on clickable links: Messages initially disables links in texts from unknown senders. However, replying to the unknown sender activates the links, as Apple assumes you know the sender. This is why scam messages often include instructions like, "If the link fails, reply 'Y' to retry, or copy and paste it into your browser." This is a major red flag.

Here's the best advice:

  • Any unknown text message containing a URL is highly suspicious.
  • If the message demands a reply to activate the URL, it's almost certainly a scam (or a poorly managed business).
  • If you suspect legitimacy, don't reply or copy the URL. Instead, visit the official website of the relevant authority (e.g., Department of Transportation, credit card company, delivery service) for information.
  • On an iPhone, use the "Report Junk" option within the message thread (this disappears after replying).
  • Block the sender's number using Apple's built-in tools.

These scams typically prey on fear, using phrases like "final notice!" or claiming to represent the government. Remember, the chances of such a text being genuine are low, and you can easily verify without responding.

Some businesses still haven't grasped the importance of avoiding SMS payment requests. I recently received numerous SMS messages about a book shipment from Canada, demanding payment of fees – which were indeed legitimate. However, the company should have directed me to their website instead of using a potentially unsafe link. This is simply not a reliable business practice anymore.
