Mainframes: The Unsung Heroes of the AI Revolution

While servers excel at general-purpose applications and handling multiple clients, mainframes are built for high-volume, mission-critical tasks. These powerful systems are frequently found in heavily regulated industries, processing financial transactions and other high-stakes data. Their strength lies in superior capacity, reliability, and security, features enhanced by advanced virtualization, robust disaster recovery, backwards compatibility, and inherent redundancy. Unlike the distributed architecture of server systems, mainframes typically handle workloads in a centralized manner.

The combination of capacity, reliability, security, and their established role in high-value transactions makes mainframes indispensable in the AI era. IBM, a leading mainframe provider handling 70% of global financial transactions, exemplifies this.

Mainframes in the AI Age

Do Mainframes Have A Role In The AI Era?

IBM's latest Z17 mainframe is designed to meet the demands of AI while maintaining the rigorous standards expected of mainframes. Powered by a 5nm 5.5GHz Telum II CPU, the Z17 boasts an 11% single-thread performance increase over its predecessor, up to 20% capacity expansion, and up to 64 TB of memory, all while consuming up to 27% less power. Telum II also includes an enhanced AI accelerator for predictive and some generative AI workloads. For more demanding generative AI tasks, the Z17 can be upgraded with the Spyre Accelerator PCIe card.

Do Mainframes Have A Role In The AI Era?

IBM reports a 7.5x increase in AI throughput compared to the Z16, achieving up to 450 billion AI inferences daily with 1ms response times.

AI Workloads Ideal for Mainframes

Mainframes' extensive use in financial transactions and mission-critical data processing makes them exceptionally well-suited for combining predictive and generative AI models. Their high-volume, centralized processing, and multi-model capabilities allow for efficient pattern analysis from transaction data, leading to improvements in fraud detection, anti-money laundering, and risk mitigation. They also enhance business productivity through AI-powered assistants and autonomous applications in areas such as automated trading and healthcare. Other applications include loan risk assessment, insurance fraud prevention, payments security, geospatial analysis, climate modeling, and cybersecurity.

These are just a few examples of how predictive, generative, and agentic AI, leveraging mainframe capabilities, deliver superior business outcomes. These outcomes would be difficult or impossible to achieve with standard server configurations, especially given the data volume and security requirements prevalent in the heavily regulated industries where mainframes are commonly deployed.

The Future is Mainframe

IBM reports over 250 client-identified AI use cases on the Z mainframe platform, a number constantly growing. However, it's not just about the hardware; IBM integrates its AI assets (watsonx, Granite, InstructLab, and consulting services) across its solutions, including the Z platform, establishing itself as a key partner in enterprise AI. Competitors like Dell, Fujitsu, and Unisys are also exploring AI's potential within mainframe environments. Given the typical 5-7 year development cycle for mainframes, it's clear that future generations of AI-enhanced mainframes are already under development. Mainframes aren't just surviving the AI era; they're flourishing.
