Google's New "Unsubscribe" Button in Messages App Tackles Text Spam
Tired of endless spam texts? Google is rolling out a simple solution: an "Unsubscribe" button directly within the Google Messages app. This new feature simplifies the often cumbersome process of opting out of unwanted automated messages.
The button appears at the bottom of suspected spam texts. A single tap initiates the unsubscribe process, prompting you to select a reason for unsubscribing (e.g., "I didn't sign up," "Too many messages," "Not interested," "Spam"). This feedback helps Google improve spam detection.
After selecting a reason, Google Messages sends a "STOP" message to the sender. A confirmation appears, and a "Start" button allows resubscription if desired. While this isn't a blocking mechanism, it aids in identifying spam, similar to email spam filters. It's not a replacement for blocking functionality.
Currently, the feature is gradually being released in several countries, including the U.S., U.K., Brazil, France, Germany, India, Mexico, and Spain. Google is also testing it with Google Messages beta users and expanding its compatibility with RCS Business Messages.

The resubscription option ("Start" button) might reinstate messaging from the sender. This feature aims to curb spam while helping Google distinguish between legitimate and automated messages—a particularly useful tool during election seasons with their influx of political text messages.
The rollout is phased, so the button may not be immediately available. Patience is key, and it's crucial to only use it on actual spam. Misuse could hinder Google's efforts to automate spam detection, potentially paving the way for a dedicated text "spam folder" in the future.
Remember, this feature is exclusive to the Google Messages app, not your phone's default messaging app. If you haven't seen it yet, allow some time for the rollout to reach your region. It's guaranteed to arrive if you're in one of the aforementioned countries.
