Windows 11's Start Menu Gets a Much-Needed Overhaul
Microsoft's Windows 11 Start menu, initially criticized for its less-than-intuitive app access, is undergoing a significant redesign. Early testing reveals a vastly improved user experience.
The updated Start menu retains familiar elements like the top search bar and pinned apps section. The "Recommended" section remains, but a key improvement is the readily accessible full app list, eliminating the need for extra clicks. Users can now organize this list using folders, categories, a grid layout, or the classic list view. The pinned apps section is also streamlined, now limited to a maximum of two rows, saving space. Users even have the option to disable the pinned apps section entirely, leaving only the full app list. The Start menu itself is slightly wider, a subtle but noticeable enhancement. These seemingly minor changes collectively create a more user-friendly experience.
The improved Start menu complements recent taskbar enhancements. Microsoft recently introduced smaller taskbar icons, offering more space and improved aesthetics. These personalization options address previous criticisms of Windows 11's inflexible taskbar. While Start11 offers more extensive customization, Microsoft's built-in improvements are a welcome change.
