Following the finale of Heresy, there's a noticeable lack of a clear narrative path leading to Frontiers. The concern isn't just about the narrative connection, but the overall lack of information about Frontiers itself. Currently, we only have concept art, a vague roadmap with codenamed expansions, and a few minor blog posts hinting at future changes.
While Bungie's desire to avoid overshadowing the upcoming Marathon reveal (this Saturday) is understandable, the purported July 15th release date (based on the current battle pass and a possible Marathon ARG clue) seems highly improbable. Past expansions had significantly longer lead times between reveal/pre-orders and release, often with several months of delay. The Final Shape, for example, was pre-orderable in May 2023 but released in June 2024, and The Witch Queen was available for pre-order in August 2021, launching in February 2022.
The current lack of information, pre-orders, pricing, and even a name for the first Frontiers expansion, just three months before the alleged release, casts doubt on a July launch. Hopefully, this prediction will prove incorrect.
Two key factors are at play. First, Frontiers represents a completely new era, which Bungie might be keeping under wraps. However, Bungie's past actions, such as revealing The Final Shape in a way that minimized the relevance of prior storylines (similar to Cayde’s death in Forsaken), suggest secrecy isn't always a priority.
Second, the anticipated release of GTA 6 this fall (though this remains uncertain) is a significant industry event. A fall delay for Frontiers/Apollo is plausible, with the exact release date likely contingent on GTA 6's announcement to avoid direct competition.
Considering the current lack of information, Bungie's history of delays, and the studio's simultaneous focus on Marathon, a July, or even a summer, release for Frontiers seems unlikely. The timeline simply doesn't seem feasible.
