Google Fonts has made subtle but important design updates (see tweet). Compared with the last large-scale revision, this update focuses more on iterative improvements. Apart from the color changing from red to blue, the most notable change is the addition of a very cool checkbox: only variable fonts are displayed .
Using “Show variable fonts only” as the primary navigation option reflects Google Fonts’ strong commitment to variable fonts. Given that Google Fonts accounts for about 90% of the market share of managed web fonts and handles trillions of requests, this move is bound to significantly increase the attention and usage of variable fonts. Web designers and developers have been expecting variable fonts for a long time, and I bet we will see it gaining wider popularity this year in practical applications.
Some variable font inspiration inspired the creation of micro websites, such as v-fonts.com and Axis-Praxis. Now there is another one: variablefonts.io! Like other websites, it also provides interactive examples, but more importantly, it also provides the latest practical suggestions and resource links.
Another great thing Google Fonts has done recently is allowing the use of font-display
attribute. It has a nice default value (swap) and can be easily changed by querying parameters. Matt Hobbs recently published an article about its role, importance, and how to use it.
Speaking of Google Fonts, I stumbled upon the Snapfont browser extension the other day. This is a pay-as-you-can-eat program (I gave them $5).
It can directly replace all fonts on the website with the font of your choice, allowing you to have a quick experience. It has no other options, so it is not suitable for fine-tuning. To me the Title button doesn't even work. But I like it's simple and easy to use and can quickly experience the website effect after using new fonts.
