Excel scroll lock is turned on unexpectedly? Easy to solve!
Imagine that you are using an Excel table normally and suddenly you can't move cells by cell-by-cell-the arrow keys no longer move to the next cell, but scroll the entire worksheet. Don't panic, your Excel is not broken, you just accidentally turned on Scroll Lock, which is easy to solve.
- How to determine if scroll lock is on?

What is Excel scroll lock?
Scroll lock controls the behavior of arrow keys in Excel.
Normally, when the scroll lock is turned off , the arrow keys allow you to move between cells: up, down, left, right.
However, when scroll lock in Excel is turned on , the arrow keys scroll the worksheet area: scroll up or down a row, and scroll left or right a column. The current selection (cell or range) does not change when scrolling the worksheet.
How to make sure scroll lock is enabled?
To see if scroll lock is on, just check the status bar at the bottom of the Excel window. In addition to displaying other useful information (such as page numbers; average, sum, and count of selected cells), the status bar also shows whether scroll lock is on :
If your arrow keys scroll the entire sheet instead of moving to the next cell, but the Excel status bar does not show the scroll lock indication, it is likely that your status bar is customized to not display the scroll lock status. To determine if this is the case, right-click the status bar to see if there is a check mark on the left side of the scroll lock. If there is no tick, just click the scroll lock to make its status appear on the status bar:
Note: The Excel status bar only displays the scroll locked status, but does not control it.
How to turn off scroll lock in Excel for Windows?
Similar to Num Lock and Caps Lock, the scroll lock function is a toggle switch, which means it can be turned on and off by pressing the scroll lock key.
Disable scroll lock in Excel using the keyboard
If you have a key marked Scroll Lock or ScrLk on your keyboard, just press it to turn off the scroll lock. Get it done! :)
Once you do this, the scroll lock will disappear from the status bar and your arrow keys will be able to move cells by cell.
Turn off scroll lock on Dell laptop
On some Dell laptops, you can use the Fn S shortcut keys to toggle the scroll locked switch.
Toggle scroll locks on HP and Lenovo laptops
On HP or Lenovo laptops, press the Fn C key combination to turn the scroll lock on or off.
Use the on-screen keyboard to delete scroll locks in Excel
If you don't have a scroll lock key and any of the key combinations mentioned above are not suitable for you, you can use the on-screen keyboard to "unlock" the scroll lock in Excel.
The fastest way to turn off screen lock in Excel is:
- Click the Windows button and type " Screen Keyboard " in the search box. Typically, typing the first two characters is enough to make the on-screen keyboard app appear at the top of the search results.
- Click the on-screen keyboard app to run it.
- The virtual keyboard will be displayed and you click the ScrLk key to remove the scroll lock.
When the ScrLk key returns to dark grey, you will know that the scroll lock is disabled. If it is blue, the scroll lock is still on.
Alternatively, you can open the virtual keyboard by:
Windows 10
Click Start > Settings > Easy Access > Keyboard and click the on-screen keyboard slider button.
Windows 8.1
Click Start , press Ctrl C to display the Super button , and then click Change Computer Settings > Easy Access > Keyboard > On-screen Keyboard Slider Button.
Windows 7
Click Start > All Programs > Attachments > Easy Access > Screen Keyboard .
To turn off the on-screen keyboard, click the X button in the upper right corner.
Scroll Lock in Excel for Mac
Unlike Excel for Windows, Excel for Mac does not show scroll locks in the status bar. So, how do you know if the scroll lock is turned on? Press any arrow keys and observe the address in the name box. If the address has not changed and the arrow keys scroll the entire sheet, you can be sure that the scroll lock is enabled.
How to delete scroll locks in Excel for Mac
On the Apple Expansion Keyboard, press the F14 key, which is a similar key to the scroll lock key on the PC keyboard.
If you have the F14 key on your keyboard but don't have the Fn key, use the Shift F14 shortcut key to switch the scroll locked switch.
Depending on your settings, you may need to press the CONTROL or OPTION or COMMAND (⌘) key instead of the SHIFT key.
If you are using a smaller keyboard without the F14 key, you can try running this AppleScript to simulate a Shift F14 keystroke to remove the scroll lock.
