Get Programmatic Control of your Builds with Netlify Build Plugins

Netlify released Build Plugins at the Jamstack Conf conference, a feature that allows you to access hooks for specific events during the build process, such as when the build starts or ends. The advantage is that the plugin is just a simple JavaScript object that you can insert logic or start libraries like you do in your application.

A Netlify build is when you upload directories to the Netlify interface via GitHub/GitLab, etc. or directly. Netlify will process all resources, download and install software packages, and generate static versions of the website for deployment to CDNs around the world.

Build Plugin allows you to perform operations at critical points in the build process, such as onPreBuild , onPostBuild , onSuccess , etc. You can execute some logic at these specific points in time, such as:

You don't need to build all the plugins yourself! You can use community-created Build Plugins. Some very interesting plugins include: a11y (accessibility), Cypress (test), inline key CSS, and my favorite Subfont (a great font optimization tool that you can watch related videos).

These plugins can be enabled with just a few clicks in the Netlify dashboard.
