At the end of the second chapter of Avowed, a monumental event takes place. Depending on your actions throughout the chapter, specifically involvement in one side quest, how this significant portion of the story plays out will be different.

We are, of course, talking about the Steel Garrote launching a full-fledged attack on the city of Fior mes Iverno. We know that the empire is determined in their conquest to secure all the Living Lands, but the Steel Garrote is an entirely different story. They are led by the Inquisitor herself, who is known to be absolutely ruthless in her approach. In this instance, she is willing to burn down one of the few safe havens in the Living Lands to secure a win for the empire. But what if you are able to stop this?

How to Save Fior mes Iverno

If you try to critical path the campaign and avoid all side quests and activities outside the main story quests, then you’ll come to the outcome that Fior mes Iverno will be burned to a crisp. The beautiful city that’s entirely inspired by Italian architecture is gone in a flash. Fortunately, there is a way to avoid this, but it means going off the beaten path.

The first thing that needs to be done is grab the side quest “Steel Resolve” from the northeast of the map. Here, Ranger Acierno will inform you that two of her best scouts have gone missing, and it’s only up to you to find them.

Upon coming across Monato’s body and freeing Verano from a bounty, they will give you more insight into the matter. All of this will lead to a traitor among their ranks: Dorso. Dorso had Monato because he found out what she was plotting: siding with the Steel Garrote to overthrow Fior mes Iverno. You can probably see how this is coming together.

Either let Dorso go or kill her, it doesn’t matter as she has told you where the Steel Garrote is hiding out: in a cave behind the waterfall. Head in and confront the Steel Garrote about their plans. Unfortunately, they aren’t thrilled to see you, and unless you take their bribe, they will attack you. If you wish to save Fior, reject the bribe and slay every one of the Garrote.

Report back to Acierno about your findings. With the quest done and the Steel Garrote’s reserve army slain, you have successfully protected Fior mes Iverno from total destruction. This doesn’t mean that it’s fully intact, as many soldiers were still slain in the battle, but the city still stands after completing the main story quest “Ancient Soil”.

Let it Burn

As you might suspect, going against the Steel Garrote also means going against not only your kin, but the emperor himself. While you may be an Envoy of the emperor, the Garrote operates on an entirely different set of rules, and if you get in their way, they will try to take you down. Regardless, your actions do have consequences, so you will need to determine if sacrificing Fior mes Iverno is worth potentially alienating your country men.

You can still complete the Steel Resolve side quest, but you will need to side with Dorso and the Steel Garrote. This will no doubt upset Giatta, but being that you are the Envoy of the empire, you can make the argument that you aren’t there to meddle in territorial skirmishes such as this.
