KDE developer Nate Graham released the latest weekly update! This week, KDE is still focused on improving and fixing bugs, despite many contributors taking a break. The highlights of this week's update are the modernization of system settings and the improvements in Wayland color management .

A big achievement this week was a significant improvement in Plasma's stability. With just 30 fifteen-minute bugs reported, the Plasma 6 reached the same level of stability as the Plasma 5 in just six months. This achievement shows that KDE developers are committed to providing users with a feature-rich and stable experience.

Table of contents

  • Wayland Enhanced
  • UI/UX improvements
  • Other notable improvements
  • The main bugs solved in this KDE update

Modernization of system settings

  • The keyboard page has been redesigned to align with the modern design language used by other system setup pages. This improvement is designed to simplify navigation and improve user experience.
  • The Thunderbolt page has undergone a UI modernization, and it also solves the problem of text readability, making it easier for users to interact with Thunderbolt settings.
  • Several system setup pages that still use QtWidgets have received UI updates, bringing their visual style closer to their modern QML counterparts. This change helps to have a more cohesive and visually appealing experience throughout the system setup.

Wayland Enhanced

Major changes have been made in enhancing Wayland support. It is worth noting that KDE window manager KWin now supports rendering intent and black dot compensation for the Wayland color management protocol, enabled by default, allowing applications with matching support to immediately take advantage of these features.

Further enhancements include:

  • KWin gains support for the "alpha-modifier" Wayland protocol.
  • Users can now copy and paste from the system clipboard when using overview or other KWin effects in a Wayland session.

UI/UX improvements

This KDE update brings several UI/UX improvements, mainly including modernizing various elements and enhancing user-friendliness:

  • The system settings keyboard page has been redesigned to improve ease of use and visual consistency with modern-like pages.
  • The system settings Thunderbolt page has been modernized for UI and additionally solved the text readability problem.
  • Several system setup pages that still use QtWidgets have received UI updates to better resemble their QML corresponding versions.
  • Discover and its system tray icons now always indicate whether the update exists or not.
  • Environmental Canadian weather provider forecasts are now correctly displayed within the default size of the system pallet popup.
  • Drag and drop a file from a web browser to the desktop or Dolphin will now display a drop-down menu with related actions, improved text and icons.
  • The "Screen Edge" effect in KWin has been renamed to "Highlight Screen Edge and Hot Angles" to align with HMI guidelines and improve user understanding.
  • Plasma's critical battery level notifications and unsaved changes dialogs in system settings have been improved for a better user experience and follow human-machine interface guidelines for increased clarity and reduced redundancy.

This update also improves consistency of design elements:

  • Okular has adjusted several text tags to comply with HIG, using the correct ellipsis and Unicode symbols.

Other notable improvements

  • Plasma's weather widget now displays "somatosensory" temperatures, giving users a more accurate perception of current weather conditions.
  • Discover and its system tray icons are now in sync with available updates, eliminating any confusion about the update status.
  • Dragging and dropping a file from a web browser to the desktop or Dolphin now displays an improved drop-down menu that contains only context-sensitive actions and has improved icons and text.

The main bugs resolved in this KDE update

The main bugs resolved in this KDE update include:

  • SVG wallpaper support has been restored in Plasma 6.1.5 after repairing the damage to the centered placement mode in Plasma 6.1.4.
  • A bug with KWin has been fixed in Plasma 6.2.0 that prevents copyed text from being pasted into certain XWayland applications.
  • A problem with Qt has been resolved in Plasma 6.2.0 that sometimes prevents the window on the disconnected screen from moving to the remaining screen.
  • Several extreme cases have been resolved in Plasma 6.2.0 that prevents Plasma's Show Alternatives pop-up from closing.
  • A problem has been fixed in Frameworks 6.6 that caused some symbolic icons in the Plasma panel to be incorrectly colored under the blended light/dark global theme.
