Behind the CSScenes, October 2022

Welcome back to Behind the CSScenes, our monthly peek behind the curtain at CSS-Tricks! This month, we're sharing development updates and celebrating recent achievements.

Last month's site redesign sneak peek generated overwhelmingly positive feedback, though the background color sparked some debate. More work is underway!

Haley Mills provides this month's content update:

Content Updates: A Harvest of Articles

September was a whirlwind of activity! We published 16 guest articles and 15 from our team, plus updated over 50 older articles with fresh resources. Huge thanks to our team and guest authors!

We're also thrilled to announce the launch of new guides. These free resources have been a cornerstone of the CSS-Tricks community since 2019. To ensure a smooth author workflow, we're initially working with select authors before opening submissions to the public. Got a guide idea? Share it in the comments!

Finally, we're excited about CloudWays joining DigitalOcean, offering a $50 credit to our community. While remaining platform-agnostic, we'll share helpful CloudWays content due to its potential value.

Now, let's hear from our senior web developer, David Berg, about the back-end migration:

Back-End Buzz: CMS Migration in Progress

The DigitalOcean team is migrating CSS-Tricks from WordPress to our custom CMS, used across our other sites. CSS-Tricks will remain at its current domain. The biggest challenge? Aligning WordPress data with our PostgreSQL database structure. WordPress's database is less intuitive, requiring creative solutions.

This migration improves database integrity and future-proofing, streamlining queries and enhancing complex relationships. This allows for static content export to a CDN, optimizing performance.

Streamlined Article Submissions

We've launched a new Typeform-based submission form for guest authors, replacing our outdated Jira-integrated system. This simplifies the process and ensures proposals don't get lost, leading to a consistent flow of fresh content. Let us know if you have suggestions for improvement!

Geoff now highlights our amazing contributors:

Shining a Spotlight on Authors

CSS-Tricks thrives on the contributions of talented individuals. This month, we welcomed five new voices:

  • Brecht De Ruyte
  • Ilknur Eren
  • Brittney Postma
  • Preethi Selvam
  • Lu Wang

Thank you to these newcomers and to our returning contributors, including Temani Afif, Preethi, Ollie Williams, and Mojtaba Seyedi, for your continued dedication to the front-end community. We appreciate your contributions!
