Dell launches a portable 14-inch 1080p monitor that can power and transmit display signals simultaneously with just one USB-C cable. More importantly, it supports both landscape and portrait modes, which is rare in portable displays.
This monitor features a 14.0-inch 1920 x 1200 resolution IPS panel, 16:10 aspect ratio, anti-glare coating, and a contrast ratio of 1500:1. Dell said it also has 100% sRGB gamut coverage and 7ms response time. While 4K resolution will be better, the 14-inch 1080p is also great enough, especially when used as a secondary monitor for laptops or tablets.
Portable monitors that use USB-C interfaces to simultaneously power and transmit display signals are not new; we have even reviewed several models on How-To Geek, such as the Plugable USBC-PDMON portable monitor. The Dell Pro 14 Plus portable monitor doesn't bring any revolutionary new features, but it seems like a very good choice to add a screen to your laptop, tablet or other USB-C device.
Like many other portable monitors, it can be displayed and powered simultaneously using a USB-C cable without having to carry a separate power cord. There are ports on both sides of the monitor and support power through up to 65W. This means you can connect the monitor to a USB-C power supply (such as a wall charger) and then connect to your device using a second USB-C port on the monitor. I have a similar Lenovo USB-C portable monitor with this feature, which I often use with my MacBook Air because after plugging the power and monitor into my laptop, there is no remaining USB port.
There are two features that make the Dell monitor stand out from the competition (some competitors). First, the display can be placed horizontally or vertically, with a built-in rotation sensor that reports the correct orientation to the connected device. Hopefully this means you don't have to go into the display options of the device and adjust the orientation manually. Another useful feature is VESA bracket compatibility – you can attach it to the monitor bracket at your desk and remove it to carry it with you. This may only be useful for businesses and other in-person workplaces, but nothing can stop you from doing the same at home.
Importantly, this monitor requires connected devices to support DisplayPort 1.2 Alt mode via USB-C. This means it should work with most laptops, desktops, phones and tablets equipped with USB-C ports with video support, including MacBook laptops, many PC ultrabooks and desktops, some Android phones, iPads and other devices. Even with an HDMI to USB-C cable, it is not suitable for devices that only support HDMI.
Dell also includes a 1-meter-long USB-C to C cable in the box with an L-shaped connector. This helps the cables properly mount under the monitor when placed in portrait orientation and also won't protrude too much on the desktop in landscape mode. However, if you lose or damage the included cable, you can use any other USB-C cable that supports data and power.
You can now buy the Dell Pro 14 Plus portable monitor (P1425) from Dell's online store for $300 and will soon be available in other retail stores. Don't confuse it with the previous generation model (model P124H).
