deepin 23: AI empowerment, a new look

deepin community held an online press conference on August 15 with the theme of "AI empowerment, excellence and difference" and officially launched the open source operating system deepin 23. This release brings major updates, including the new DDE Vision, AI For OS, Linyaps application ecosystem and deepin IDE integrated development environment.

Zhang Lei, chairman of the deepin community, said in his opening speech: "In the past 20 years, deepin has made significant innovations and breakthroughs in the field of open source operating systems. It not only leads the development of domestic open source distributions, but also shows forward-looking thinking in the transformation to an independent research and development desktop environment."

As a tribute to the community's 20th anniversary, deepin 23 has gone through three years of development, carried out more than 200 product optimizations and new functions, and has gone through 9 version iterations, 51 internal tests and the development of 8 independent research and development tools. Every innovation aims to enhance the quality of deepin 23.

Root community development, full-stack independent operating system development

In order to truly control the development of operating systems, upstream community leadership and supply chain security, the Chinese server operating system root community represented by the Euler community of the Open Atom Open Source Foundation and the Chinese desktop operating system root community represented by the deepin community were established in 2022.

Linux operating system root community refers to a community that builds its operating system from the Linux kernel and other open source components, does not rely on upstream distributions, and receives substantial contributions from external individuals and companies. The deepin community first independently built a new repository and developed tools based on the deepin root community to make developers more easily and efficiently contribute code. These efforts are known within the community as “independent upstream.”

As the first distribution based on the root community, deepin 23 implements independent modules at all levels of the operating system, providing outstanding development tools for open source enthusiasts around the world.

deepin 23 is equipped with Linux 6.6 LTS core. From the warehouse to the application layer, the core components of the operating system use many independent research and development solutions:

  • The independently built beige-23 warehouse adopts independent selection and update strategies, and has carried out fine-grained maintenance of more than 8,000 core packages, significantly enhancing the stability and security of the system. It also better supports new hardware and architectures such as ARM64, RISC-V, and LoongArch64.
  • At the service level, deepin developed an AM application management framework, which not only facilitates more detailed resource and permission control at the application level, but also implements a unified scheduling strategy, solving the previous resource management chaos and background process problems, and leaving room for future expansion.
  • At the SDK layer, the DTK general development framework developed based on Qt meets the developers' needs for "one development, multi-platform and multi-architecture reuse" and improves development efficiency. It has gone through six version iterations, more than 110 updates, submitted nearly 200,000 lines of code, and has been ported to more than 10 Linux distributions. In deepin 23, more than 40 native applications (such as browsers, music players, and email clients) are developed using DTK.
  • In the desktop environment layer, the world's first popular DDE led by the Chinese community has been fully upgraded. The new taskbar, launcher and more personalized themes significantly improve system management and user interaction experience while retaining V20 user habits. The display format is carefully designed to maintain a unified style and rhythm, ensuring smooth and consistent visual transitions during different operations.
  • At the application layer, deepin provides a comprehensive native application development matrix: the deepin IDE integrates AI functions to support various software and hardware architectures and programming languages; it provides a complete set of basic functions for one-stop multi-scenario development, realizing vertical security from underlying services to upper-level development tools, truly ensuring independent development control.
  • "YouQu", a comprehensive automated testing framework led by UnionTech, stands out for its easy deployment environment and powerful capabilities. It supports a variety of automated testing scenarios, including UI, WEB, interfaces and command lines, significantly improving testing efficiency and quality, bringing unprecedented convenience and efficiency to development and testing on Linux.
  • Linyaps package management tool started in 2017 and has since been donated to the Open Atom Open Source Foundation. Through its powerful cross-distribution support, it effectively solves the compatibility problems caused by strong dependencies and security problems caused by loose permissions in traditional package management systems. At present, Linyaps is developing rapidly, with more than 400 developers contributing more than 2,000 Linyaps applications, of which more than 1,000 have been included in the deepin 23 application store.

Recently, CPU manufacturers such as Intel, Loongson, Feiteng and Xuantie have announced their compatibility with deepin 23, making it the first open source desktop operating system to support all mainstream general computing architectures (including X86, ARM64, LoongArch64 and RISC-V). As the first Chinese open source operating system to integrate large models, the famous overseas magazine "Linux Magazine" highly praised deepin: "deepin has integrated AI into the desktop operating system and began to challenge Microsoft's Copilot", and "This may just be the beginning of deepin 23 AI integration."

Since UOS AI began to empower deepin, it has supported more than 20 natural language command calls set by operating system, more than 40 usage scenarios, and has adapted to more than 60 applications at the application layer. In the chip layer, it supports mainstream domestic CPU chips and mainstream domestic and foreign GPU chips such as Nvidia. At the press conference, Tian Jun, senior R&D manager of Intel open source technology, shared the latest development of Intel platform support and deepin's AI PC. deepin Intel SIG team provides centralized support for the latest deep integration of Meteor Lake and deepin. As an important part of the Intel Ultra platform, it brings unprecedented performance improvements and rich feature support to deepin.

Tian Jun said: "Through the collaborative computing of CPU, NPU and GPU, deepin 23 can handle various practical AI applications, especially local inference capabilities. The high throughput and graphics processing capabilities of GPUs, the low-power dedicated AI algorithm capabilities of NPUs, and the low-latency logic computing capabilities of CPUs together constitute the powerful AI computing capabilities of deepin 23."

Recently, the national office application WPS also announced the progress of its joint AI office solution development, and the WPS Office For Linux personal version based on deepin 23 will be launched in the deepin application store in late August. Not only will users experience the three flagship WPS products that integrate AIGC in this version, they will also benefit from the functional interaction between UOS AI and WPS AI in building a local personal knowledge base.
