Stream Audio to Your Smart Speaker: A Comprehensive Guide
Many smart speakers can play music via voice commands, but they also offer versatile audio streaming capabilities from various devices. This allows for easier podcast and playlist management on your phone, tablet, or laptop before transferring playback to your smart speaker.
Amazon Echo
For Spotify users, streaming to an Amazon Echo is simple thanks to Spotify Connect. Devices using the app automatically connect on the same Wi-Fi network, requiring no extra setup. Locate the device button (speaker icon, right of the progress bar on desktop, bottom left on mobile) in the Spotify app; your Echo will appear in the list. Select it to begin streaming, controlling playback from your chosen device.
Amazon Music also integrates seamlessly. Use the cast button (rectangle with Wi-Fi symbol, top right) in the app to select your Echo speaker (on the same Wi-Fi network).
Audible requires using the Alexa app instead of the Audible app. Select your audiobook from the "Play" tab to stream it via your Alexa speaker.
Bluetooth pairing is another option. Say "Alexa, pair Bluetooth," then connect your device through your device's Bluetooth settings (Android: Connected devices; iOS: Bluetooth; Windows: Devices & Bluetooth & other devices; macOS: Bluetooth in System Preferences).
Google Nest
Google Nest speakers also support Spotify Connect, functioning similarly to Echo devices. Use the Spotify app's device button to select your Nest speaker (same Wi-Fi network). Playback control remains within the app.
Alternatively, use Google Nest's Chromecast functionality. The cast button (rectangle with Wi-Fi waves) in Android or iOS apps allows streaming to your Nest speaker (same Wi-Fi network). Note that Apple Music on iOS is an exception, though its Android counterpart supports Chromecast.
Chromecasting from Windows and macOS is less direct, limited to audio from Chrome browser tabs. Use the three-dot menu, selecting "Cast" to send the audio to your Nest speaker. This works with web apps like YouTube Music.
Bluetooth pairing is also available. Enable it in the Google Home app (speaker > cog icon > Audio > Paired Bluetooth devices > Enable pairing mode), then connect your device via its Bluetooth settings (Android: Connected devices; iOS: Bluetooth; Windows: Devices & Bluetooth & other devices; macOS: Bluetooth in System Preferences).
Apple HomePod
The Apple HomePod primarily uses AirPlay for audio streaming, limiting compatibility to Apple devices.
On iPhones/iPads, use Control Center's audio playback controls and the AirPlay button (arrow in circular rings) to select the HomePod (same Wi-Fi network). Alternatively, tap your iPhone/iPad on the HomePod (Bluetooth enabled, same Wi-Fi network, "Transfer to HomePod" enabled in iOS/iPadOS Settings).
On Macs, go to System Preferences > Sound > Output, selecting the HomePod. Audio from any app will then stream through the HomePod.
The HomePod lacks Bluetooth and Chromecast support, restricting streaming from non-Apple devices. Spotify Connect is also unsupported, though AirPlay allows Spotify streaming from Apple devices.
