TikTok is back on the App Store and Google Play. The app reappeared late Thursday, restoring its previous reviews and download counts after its January removal.
This follows a report by Bloomberg's Mark Gurman. Apple and Google initially removed TikTok due to the Protecting Americans from Foreign Adversary Controlled Applications Act, which levies significant financial penalties on companies distributing, maintaining, or updating the app.
Despite previously advocating for a TikTok ban, President Trump issued an executive order last month temporarily halting enforcement for 75 days. Attorney General Pam Bondi subsequently confirmed this to Apple and Google, paving the way for TikTok's return.
However, this reprieve doesn't signal the end of the ban. The law remains in effect, though currently unenforced. The government's next steps remain unclear, including whether the President has the authority to delay enforcement. This temporary stay expires in April, at which point the government's actions will be crucial.
The original aim was to compel ByteDance, TikTok's parent company, to sell to an American entity. Potential buyers included Microsoft and Oracle, with even Elon Musk considered. Trump has also suggested a U.S. government purchase via a sovereign wealth fund.
Regardless of future developments, TikTok is currently available for download in the U.S. after a month of uncertainty.
