Easily convert a PDF to an image on your phone

You may not often need to convert PDFs on your phone to JPG, but this requirement often occurs when it is most inconvenient. For example, when your doctor's office uses an app that only allows you to upload medical records as images and you don't have any paper copies that can be faxed, mailed, or delivered in person. Doctor, what is this happening?

Unfortunately, on iPhone or native Android devices, there is no easy built-in way to save PDFs to your camera roll. Some Android manufacturers, including OnePlus, Samsung and Xiaomi, make it easier with long screenshots, but your phone may not have this feature.

If you are considering downloading a brand new app for a one-time task, stop. We'll help you.

Take a screenshot by yourself

If there are no built-in options, you have two options: take screenshots and crop them yourself, or use a browser-based photo editing program. To be clear, you can technically "snap" screenshots of an entire webpage in Safari on iOS, but the generated document will not be saved as an image. It will be saved as a PDF, which...is exactly the opposite of what you want to do. Recording your iPhone or Android phone screen is also not an option, as you end up with a video file instead of an image.

Whatever your phone operating system is, screenshots are probably the fastest solution. But it's also the most confusing - you may need to crop and organize the image before sending it. If your PDF is not suitable for your phone screen, you also have to take multiple screenshots.

Capture the screen by pressing and releasing the side and volume up buttons simultaneously on iPhones without Home button. If your phone has a Home button, press and release the Home button and the side or Sleep/Wake buttons at the same time. From there, click on the image preview in the lower left corner to edit, crop or mark the shooting content.

On native Android, press the

Power and Volume reduction buttons at the same time. Alternatively, open the app carousel by swiping up from the bottom of the screen and click Screen shot . Open the Google Photos app, click Library, and then click Screenshot. Click Edit to make changes. On older Android versions, open the Gallery app for your phone, find the Album View, and then open the Screenshots folder.

Using the photo editing program

Browser-based image editing tools are a great solution when you don't want to buy or download new software. We like Photopea, so we will use it as an example here. The advantage of this approach is that you don't have to crop every page of a multi-page PDF - Photopea will do this for you. Time differences are negligible, so you can choose the way you like. If you spend more time on tasks, you can also convert long PDFs to single image files.

First, open Photopea in the browser of your choice. Then click

File, to open and to browse to find PDF on your phone. It opens each page of the PDF in a separate layer, so if you have a five-page document, you will have five layers. From there, open the file again, click to export as , and select your preferred file type. What happens next depends on your operating system.

Second operations on iOS

Click Save in the pop-up dialog box, iOS will ask you if you want to download the image as a zip file. Click to download and go to your file application (if you delete it for some reason, you can get it from the App Store).

In the folder on my iPhone, click to download . When you touch the zip file, iOS automatically creates a folder containing a PDF page saved as an image. Click the Share button (a square with arrows pointing out of it) and click Save image to save each image to your camera roll.

### Follow-up operations on Android

Like iOS, click

in the dialog box displayed to save . If your PDF has two or fewer pages, it will automatically download as an image file where the pages are pasted side by side. However, if you are dealing with larger documents, Android downloads different pages of the PDF as a single image in the zip file.

To retrieve it, go to the FileApp and click Download. If you don't see the compressed folder, swipe down to refresh the list. When you are done, click on it and then click Unzip - the image will appear in the download folder as a single file.

You will then see a second dialog box confirming that the extraction is successful. Select the box next to Delete ZIP file to delete the folder you downloaded from Photopea. Click to finish .

Advanced: Merge layers into a single image

There is a way to convert multi-page PDFs to a single image file using Photopea, but this requires more work and finger flexibility.

After the PDF is opened as a layer, you can arrange them vertically. Click the Lay (Lay) button on the right, and then touch the layer you want to move. Click the layer button again to return to the image. Move the page to where you want it and repeat the process for each layer – Photopea should capture each layer to the layer above it. If you have problems, try clicking on the various layer names in the Layers dialog box to force the program to admit that you want to process image elements.

From there, click the layer in the menu bar at the top of the browser window to open the drop-down menu. Select Merge the image and it merges everything into one layer. Next, open the file, , and export it to , and select your file type. Click in the dialog that appears to save , and what happens next will be similar to what we described above for iOS and Android. However, on iPhone, there is no zip file—just one image where all the pages are stacked together.

Create long screenshots on selected Android devices

Some Android phones allow you to take extended, scrollable screenshots. On Xiaomi phones, this process involves swiping down with three fingers to bring up a pop-up window showing

scroll. From there, you can scroll until you click to finish . On a OnePlus phone, press the standard Android Screenshot button combination ( Volume down and Power) and select Extended Screenshot. Maybe one day there will be an easier way to do all of this, but for now, well, this is the season for screenshots.
