Most phones offer Night Mode, but this only adjusts color temperature, not brightness. While great for evening use, it won't solve the problem of a too-bright screen in a dark room. We need a different approach. While you can't technically dim the backlight beyond the device's limit, these solutions create a dark filter overlay, giving the illusion of lower brightness.
iPhone: Reduce White Point
Dimming your iPhone screen is surprisingly easy, though it requires navigating a few menus.
Go to Settings > General > Accessibility > Display Accommodations. At the bottom, find Reduce White Point. Enable it and adjust the slider. Higher percentages result in lower perceived brightness.
For quicker access, create a shortcut: Accessibility > Accessibility Shortcut, select Reduce White Point. Now, triple-clicking the home button toggles this feature. You can also assign other accessibility options to this shortcut, accessing them via the triple-click menu.
Android: Use a Screen Filter App
Android phones generally lack an equivalent to the iPhone's white point setting. You'll need a third-party app. We recommend Screen Filter for its ease of use.
Open the app, adjust the filter brightness (lower slider = dimmer screen), and tap Enable Screen Filter. The screen will instantly dim. Note that on Android Oreo and later, the notification drawer might remain brighter.
