Smartphones have become incredibly intelligent, capable of voice recognition and rapid route plotting. But with the right apps, their capabilities extend far beyond these functions. They can now identify objects in the real world, from dog breeds to landmarks, acting as powerful visual search tools. This is achieved through a combination of camera input and AI-powered object recognition.

Visual Lookup and Live Text (Apple)

Apple devices with A12 Bionic chips or newer (iPhones from 2018, iPads from 2019) running the latest software offer Visual Lookup and Live Text. Visual Lookup identifies objects in existing photos (art, landmarks, flowers, books, pets). A sparkle effect around the info button ("i" in a circle) indicates identifiable content. Tapping the button and the central icon reveals details about the identified item.

Live Text, available in Photos and Camera apps, identifies text without taking a photo. A Live Text icon (three horizontal lines) appears; tapping it allows text selection. Selected text can be web-searched ("Look Up") or translated ("Translate").

Google Lens

Google Lens (standalone Android app, part of the Google app on iOS/iPadOS) recognizes plants, animals, landmarks, and functions like an image search. On Android, use "Search with your camera" to identify objects in real-time or within existing photos. iOS/iPadOS users access it via the camera icon in the Google app search bar or a Google Lens button in Google Photos. Beyond identification, Google Lens offers text copying, translation, online shopping, and even math problem solving.

Other Apps

Many other apps offer similar object recognition. Snapchat's "Scan" feature (Android and iOS) identifies cars, dogs, plants, wine, and solves math problems. More specialized apps exist: Merlin Bird ID uses sound to identify birds, while Picture Bird uses images. PictureThis helps identify and diagnose plant illnesses. For outdoor enthusiasts, PeakVisor identifies mountain peaks using location and peak shape.
