How to set up profiles on your smart streaming devices

Sharing a streaming device? Tired of mixed-up app selections and viewing histories? Creating individual user profiles is the solution! While some apps offer built-in profiles, managing your entire streaming experience requires device-level profiles, similar to user accounts on a computer. Let's explore how to set this up on popular devices.

Chromecast with Google TV:

This feature is currently available on the latest Chromecast with Google TV, with broader rollout expected. To add a profile:

  1. Go to your profile picture (top right).
  2. Select "Add account."
  3. Choose "Add a child" for a managed account or "Manage accounts" then "Add another account" for an adult.

Child profiles allow for app and content control, plus screen time limits. Adult profiles require a Google account login. Profile selection appears on startup, or by holding the Home button on the remote, or selecting your profile picture and choosing "Switch account."

Amazon Fire TV Stick and Cube:

Setting up profiles on Fire TV devices is straightforward:

  1. Open Settings (cog icon).
  2. Select Account & Profile Settings, then Profiles.
  3. Choose Add a profile. Existing Prime Video or Amazon Household profiles will appear; otherwise, select Create a New Profile.
  4. Enter a name, or choose This is a Child Profile for parental controls.
  5. Select a Profile Icon.
  6. Click Add.

Profile selection is available on startup and via the home screen (left-hand side of the navigation bar). Editing and removal options are also provided.

Apple TV and Apple TV 4K:

Apple TV devices also support multiple user accounts. After initial setup:

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Choose Users and Accounts, then Add New User.
  3. Select "Sign in with iPhone" (fastest method) or "Sign in Manually" to enter Apple ID credentials.

Each account maintains separate apps, content, and recommendations. Switching accounts is done via Users and Accounts in Settings ("Switch Current User") or by pressing the Home and Menu buttons together on your remote to access the tvOS Control Center. Removing users is equally simple within the Users and Accounts settings.
