How to delete one photo from an Instagram carousel (and get it back if you change your mind)

Removing unwanted photos from your Instagram carousel posts is easier than you think! This guide shows you how to delete a single image from a multi-photo post, and how to recover deleted photos if you change your mind. Remember, this only works for carousels with three or more images.
Deleting a Photo from an Instagram Carousel
- Locate the Post: Open the Instagram post containing the photo you want to remove.
- Access the Edit Menu: Tap the three dots (...) in the upper right corner of the post. Select "Edit."
- Select the Photo: Swipe through the carousel until you reach the image you wish to delete.
- Delete the Photo: Tap the trash can icon in the upper left corner of the selected image. (If you don't see it, scroll up—the caption editor is likely open).
- Confirm Deletion: Instagram will prompt you to confirm. Tap "Delete."
- Save Changes: Tap "Done" (iOS) or the blue checkmark (Android) to save your edits.
Recovering Deleted Photos or Videos
Instagram keeps deleted photos for 30 days in your "Recently Deleted" folder. Here's how to recover them:
- Access Your Activity: On your Instagram profile, tap the three lines in the upper right corner. Select "Your activity."
- Open Recently Deleted: Scroll down and tap "Recently deleted."
- Restore or Permanently Delete: Tap the photo you want to restore or delete. Tap the three dots (...) in the upper right corner. Choose "Restore" to bring it back (it will appear at the end of the carousel) or "Delete" to remove it permanently.
Important Note: Restoring a deleted photo from a carousel will place it at the end of the carousel, not its original position. If order is crucial, consider re-uploading the entire carousel.
