How to work and use Rufus
Rufus is very similar to AI chatbots like ChatGPT or Gemini. It is trained to process “Amazon’s vast catalog of product, customer reviews, community Q&A, and information on the web” and then filter, link and summarize this information to answer your questions.
However, these robots do not simply copy and paste information – they are designed to generate novel and unique replies, so (as with all AI models) there may be errors. Amazon says Rufus is “may not always accurate”, so be sure to carefully check important details—don’t think that all information Rufus provides is 100% correct, and don’t share private or personal information with it.
If you are using the Amazon shopping app for Android or iOS, you can find Rufus on the right side of the bottom navigation bar (Rufus' logo is two circles with stars): Click this button to open the chat Window and start asking questions. If you shop through the Amazon website, you will see the Rufus button on the left side of the top toolbar.
Rufus will immediately provide some suggestions for questions – some of which may be related to your recent search or purchase. Click on any suggestions, or enter your own question or prompt and Rufus will start working.
After each reply, you have the opportunity to ask a follow-up question (Rufus remembers the conversation history) and rate the replies you receive (by like or clicking on the button). You can clear chat history in Rufus, but this can only be done in the app, not on the website: click on three dots (top right corner) and select Manage chat and Clear chats Record .
Suggestions to try to ask Rufus
Rufus knows what you are viewing on the Amazon platform, so you can ask it questions about the product that is displayed on your screen. For example, you can ask about the weight, material, or battery life of the item. In some cases, the robot directly references the contents in the list.
In addition to a single product page, Rufus can answer shopping questions more widely. You might want to ask about the best tools you need to do a specific job, a comparison of two specific items, or what to do with a certain item. You can also ask about trends in product categories – for example, to know which products are popular with other shoppers.
You can ask very creative questions. For example, you can ask about the tools and materials you need to build a garden shed, gifts for a 5-year-old’s birthday, or extra items you might need to host a dinner party. No matter what advice you need, Rufus will do its best to give you some tips.
This is where Rufus is more like other generative AI chatbots: If you lack shopping inspiration, or are not sure about the comparison of the two TV technologies, then you can get the answer. The questions you ask don't have to be specifically targeted at products sold on Amazon, but you'll likely see links to some related items on your website. Finally, you can also chat with Rufus to see the status of your current order, or the time when you last ordered (for example) packaging tape. Sometimes you get direct answers, sometimes you get links to relevant pages on your Amazon website.
