Migrating from X (formerly Twitter) to Bluesky: A Comprehensive Guide
Many users are leaving X and joining Bluesky. This guide helps you make the switch.
1. Download Your X Archive
Preserve your X history by downloading your data archive. On the X website, navigate to More (three dots) > Settings and privacy > Your account > Download an archive of your data. Request your archive; it may take up to 48 hours to process. Once ready, download the zip file containing your tweets, account information, and more.
2. Create Your Bluesky Account
Sign up for Bluesky at the official website. You'll need an email address, date of birth, and a username. Add a profile picture and describe your interests. After account creation, customize your profile (cover photo, bio) via Account picture (top left) > Edit profile. Share your profile link using the three-dot menu.
3. Transfer Your X Following and Favorites
While you can start fresh, tools assist in transferring data. For posts, the Porto browser extension (Chrome and Edge) migrates your tweets (excluding replies, quote tweets, and retweets). For finding your X followers on Bluesky, use Sky Follower Bridge (Chrome, Edge, Firefox). Open your X following list, authorize the extension with your Bluesky credentials, and it will identify matching users. Follow them individually or use the "Follow All" option.
4. Managing Your X and Bluesky Accounts
You can maintain your X account to keep following accounts not on Bluesky and protect your username. Regular logins prevent account deactivation. To delete your X account, go to More (three dots) > Settings and privacy > Your account > Deactivate your account. Deactivation hides your profile for 30 days; reactivation occurs upon login. Permanent deletion happens after 30 days of inactivity.
5. Exploring Bluesky
Download the Bluesky app (Android/iOS) for optimal experience. Familiar features like lists, direct messaging, and post visibility controls are available. Explore unique Bluesky features like feeds (tracked tags) and starter packs (account collections). Bluesky offers a user-friendly interface for a smooth transition.
