Dive into Civilization 7's Multiplayer: A Comprehensive Guide

Ready to conquer the world with friends in Civilization 7's multiplayer? This guide covers crossplay, platform compatibility, and getting started on PC, PS5, Xbox, and Switch. We've tested extensively on PC and PS5, and have the lowdown on Xbox and Switch.

Civilization 7: Multiplayer Guide

Whether you're playing side-by-side or across continents, this guide will help you navigate Civ 7's multiplayer. Note that there are some platform-specific limitations.

Important Note (February 11th, 2025): Firaxis has temporarily disabled crossplay in Civilization 7 while deploying patches. PC is prioritized, so crossplay will resume once console updates are complete. We'll update this guide accordingly.

Joining or Hosting a Multiplayer Game:

First, select "Multiplayer" from the main menu. You'll then choose between:

  • Internet: For most online play.
  • LAN: For local online play (requires all players to select LAN). The LAN interface is a simplified version of the internet interface.

Internet Play:

Join public games directly from the list or create your own:

  • Joining a Game: Use the "Join Code" option and enter the code provided by the host.
  • Creating a Game: Click "Create Game," customize settings, wait for the "Joining Lobby," then click "Show Code" to share with your friends. They'll use this code to join your private game.

Setting Up Crossplay:

Same Platform: If playing with friends on the same platform, they should appear in your Social menu (top-right of the main menu).

Crossplay (Currently Disabled): Once crossplay is re-enabled, you'll need to exchange 2K account IDs (found on your in-game information tab). Add each other's IDs to enable crossplay between PC, PS5, Xbox, and Switch.

Nintendo Switch Specifics:

The Switch version has limitations:

  • Player Count: Maximum of four players during the Antiquity and Exploration Ages, increasing to six in the Modern Age (compared to four and eight on other platforms).
  • Map Sizes: Only Small maps are supported; Standard and larger maps are unavailable.

When creating a game on a non-Switch platform with Switch players, you must adhere to the Switch's limitations.
