Microsoft enhances Excel and PowerPoint with OneNote's intuitive "Draw and Hold" feature. This time-saving tool simplifies shape creation by automatically converting freehand drawings into perfectly formed geometric shapes. No more hunting through menus!
Initially launched for OneNote in 2023, its popularity led to its integration into Word, and now, Excel and PowerPoint are benefiting. The process is remarkably straightforward:
Using the drawing pen, sketch a basic geometric shape (circles, hexagons, lines, etc., even more complex shapes like stars work well). Upon completion, simply hold the mouse button for a brief moment. The sketch instantly transforms into a crisp, clean shape.
Release the mouse immediately after drawing to preserve the freehand style. Accidental activation? Easily undo with Ctrl Z.
Select the "Select" arrow tool to deselect the pen. Resize or reposition the shape as needed – just like shapes created via the standard menu.
While similar to "Ink to Shape," Draw and Hold offers greater control. Unlike "Ink to Shape's" automatic conversion, Draw and Hold provides the option to maintain freehand drawings or instantly refine them with a simple hold.
Currently, Draw and Hold is available for Word and OneNote users via Microsoft 365 on Windows desktops. For Excel and PowerPoint, it's currently in beta testing for Microsoft Insiders using Version 2410 (Build 18108.20000) or later. A wider rollout is expected following Insider feedback.
