HomeSystem TutorialWindows SeriesFour Cool Things You Can Do with Windows Phone Link

You’ve installed Phone Link on your PC or laptop and hooked your phone up to the app. You now have your own little phone-based ecosystem – one through which you can use your Windows device just like your phone.

But how do you get the best out of Phone Link?

We answer that question by revealing four of the cool things you can do with Windows Phone Link.

Trick 1: Receiving and Sending Text Messages

Let’s start with the basics and talk about how Phone Link lets you handle your texts. As soon as you open the app, you’ll default to the “Messages” tab and see about 10 of your most recent text threads. Give one of them a click and you’ll get a screen like this:

See that “Send a Message” box? You can use that to type out and send text messages within the chat just as you would with your phone.

You can also start new text threads by following these steps.

Step 1. Hit the text icon to the right of where it says “Messages”

Step 2. Enter the name or phone number of somebody who’s in your phone’s address book in the text box on the right-hand sign. Give the appropriate option a click to open your new text thread.

From there, you can write (and receive) texts using this PC-based text thread. Better yet, the thread will also appear on your phone so you can text on the go and then continue your conversation when you get back to your Windows device.

Trick 2: Extract Photos From Your Phone

Phone Link allows you to pull images from your phone’s gallery onto your Windows device. However, there’s a catch – you can only access the photos you’ve taken using Phone Link. That means no downloaded gallery pictures when you have a basic connection.

Still, it’s a pretty cool feature that’s fairly simple to use:

Step 1. Select the “Photos” option from the top of the screen to pull up your most recent phone photos inside Phone Link.

Step 2. Right-click the photo you want to port to your Windows device and select what you want to do from the menu that appears. You have all of the standard options, including the option to copy the image to your device or save it. You can even delete the photo from your phone using Phone Link.

Trick 3: Sync From Your Phone to Your Windows Device Over Mobile Data

Maybe you don’t have the best Wi-Fi connection in the world but your mobile data plan is as solid as a rock. That’s a problem when you’re trying to sync your phone with Phone Link. But it’s a problem you can solve with a clever syncing option found in the Phone Link app.

Step 1. Click on the gear icon at the top-right of the Phone Link app to enter “Settings.”

Step 2. Head over to the “Features” option in settings and locate “Sync over mobile data” in the “Additional settings” section.

Step 3. Click the downward arrow next to “Sync over mobile data” and check the box next to “Allow sync over mobile data when I’m not connected to Wi-Fi.”

Now, your phone can sync with Windows Phone Link (and vice-versa) whether you have a Wi-Fi connection or you’re relying on your phone’s data plan.

Trick 4: Fiddle With Basic Phone Settings

This last trick is something that amuses us more than anything, though it’s cool to see it in action. Once you’ve set up Phone Link, you’ll see a basic set of phone status icons at the top-left of the screen. You have your standards, such as your phone’s volume level and the “Do Not Disturb” icon, along with battery and Wi-Fi settings.

You can toggle all of these options on your phone and it’ll show up in Phone Link instantly. Take a look what happens when we turn the volume on using our phone:

The Phone Link volume icon lights up as well to show us exactly what’s happening with the phone. You can also toggle via Phone Link as long as you set up the notification permissions for the app on your phone, which gives you full two-way control.
