As you explore the world of Luma Island, you'll almost certainly come across a variety of ruins scattered across the different regions. If you've ventured inside and explored them, you might find a special locked door in each one, marked with a not-too-friendly-looking skull sign.

Luma Island: Archaeologist Profession Guide

Ordinarily, you can't open it up – there's no breaking it with a whip, flipping a switch in the room, or hitting it with your pickaxe. However, if you've chosen to become an Archaeologist and get mentored by Arianne, you'll be able to open up these doors and unlock a path full of mystery and ancient legends.

What Is The Archaeologist Profession?

Luma Island: Archaeologist Profession Guide

The Archaeologist Profession is one of the seven available Professions you can choose from at the Town Hall after completing the tutorial or getting your first profession, and it's the only one marked with three Skulls, as opposed to regular difficulty stars.

You can have multiple Professions at one time, or even all seven at once, but you pay an increasing cost in Gold for each Profession permit you buy.

This is due to the difficulty of obtaining the Broken Relics as part of your quests, and because you can actually lose the relics while you're gathering them, and will need to reobtain them if you want to craft the restored item multiple times after a certain point.

Broken Relics are classified as fragile objects, and once you pick them up from one of the Archaeologist-only rooms found in each Temple, you obtain a Lost On Death item menu that exists the entire time you're within the temple.

Luma Island: Archaeologist Profession Guide

Each time you die and return to the entrance of a room, you lose one of these lives, and if you run out of them, the Broken Relics will be destroyed, and you'll need to pick them up from their Archaeologist Room again.

Taking a hit from a minor enemy such as a Bat and losing a few items doesn't count as a death, and won't count towards the Broken Relics disappearing. Things that are considered a death and lower your lives include:

  • Being hit by any type of temple trap, such as a Fire-breathing Statue or Rolling Saw.
  • Being hit by certain enemies, such as a Saw Plant in the Jungle Temples.

Leaving the temple at any point will cause you to forfeit the items in your Lost On Death menu, and you'll need to get the relics again.

The good thing is that each room in a temple has a separate life count. For example, if you lost two out of your three lives to different traps but entered the next room, your lost lives would get refilled.

Once you complete and exit the temple via the last room without losing the Broken Relics, you'll be rewarded with a permanent version that can be used in crafting to restore its respective relic, and won't be lost if you happen to die outside the temple.

How To Find Broken Relics

Luma Island: Archaeologist Profession Guide

Broken Relics are always found within regional temples, and there's a total of six of them per region except for the Farm, as it only has two available.

The Yucatali Necklace, Ring, Staff, and Chalice don't have broken versions found in a temple, and they're the only relics you can craft with regular materials in the Archaeologist's Workbench.

Getting the temporary Broken Relics is easy. All you need to do is enter a temple, open the door with the skull insignia in the first room, and then grab the two relics off the floor.

The real difficulty will then come in having to complete the temple for the first time or go through its puzzles again without losing all your Archaeology Lives in one room and having the temporary relics get destroyed.

At first, this won't be too difficult, but it will gradually become harder to do as the temples get more rooms and become more difficult.

How To Get More Archaeology Lives

Luma Island: Archaeologist Profession Guide

To get more lives within a temple, you'll need to upgrade your Whip to specific levels. Each time you reach the end of an upgrade tier, you'll need the next main material to transform it into a new version.

When you do this, you'll get another Archaeology Life, up to a maximum of five by the time you obtain the Volcanic Whip, the final type available.

All Archaeologist Profession Recipes

Luma Island: Archaeologist Profession Guide

As an Archaeologist, you'll be using the Archaeologist's Workbench to repair the Broken Relics, and both the Ore Smelter and Rubble Refinery to obtain the different metal bars and gems needed for making many of them.

If you start as an Archaeologist, the Blacksmith or Jewelrymaker Professions make a great second choice, as they both use the Ore Smelter and Rubble Refineries, obtain materials from the same locations, and can make Gold more consistently.

Alongside the mining-related materials needed, you'll also need different regional Relic Fragments, which can be obtained any time you search a Treasure Pile or open any type of Treasure Chest.

  • Yucatali Relic Fragments come from the Farm and Town.
  • Tolcani Relic Fragments come from the Forest.
  • Atziri Relic Fragments come from the Mountain.
  • Zapocala Relic Fragments come from the Jungle.
