Unlike many RPGs, Dragon Age: Inquisition doesn't offer one large open world to explore. Instead, much of the game takes place across a collection of wide-open locations. Each one is like a mini open world, and you get access to several of them fairly early in the game. As such, you can visit the ones you have available in any order. However, that would be a mistake.

Dragon Age: Inquisition - The Best Order In Which To Explore Locations

After all, you can gain access to some of them long before you have the capability to survive an expedition to the location. If you go there too early, there's a good chance you will be swiftly dealt with by the enemies that will be waiting there. You can avoid this if you explore the locations in the correct order. Here is that order.

The Best Order To Explore Each Location

Dragon Age: Inquisition - The Best Order In Which To Explore Locations

This order only includes the wide-open locations that you're encouraged to explore, such as the Hinterlands and Storm Coast. It doesn't include small places that you visit for single quests.

Location

Recommended Level

Explanation

Haven

  • 1
  • You don't get any choice but to visit Haven first, as the game already places you there after the opening quest.

Hinterlands

  • 2 (first visit)
  • 4-7
  • 8-12
  • The Hinterlands is the first place you can scout from the War Table, so you have to go there once you're done exploring Haven for the first time.
  • You can do plenty of things at the location during your first visit.
  • You may find some areas with level four or even level eight enemies.
  • You can likely build up to level four just from doing quests in the Hinterlands.
  • Leave the level eight areas for now, though, and come back to them later when you're at the required level.

Val Royeaux

  • 4-6
  • As part of the story, you're encouraged to visit Val Royeaux after the Hinterlands.
  • There isn't much combat here, so your level doesn't matter too much.

Storm Coast

  • 5 (first visit)
  • 7-11
  • 13-15
  • You get the chance to scout the Storm Coast after scouting the Hinterlands.
  • It's a location that you may need to return to multiple times since there are a few areas with vastly different leveled enemies.

Forbidden Oasis

  • 8 (first visit)
  • 5-15
  • 18-20
  • You gain access to the Forbidden Oasis once you've found a shard in one of the other locations.
  • It isn't exactly important when you go to the Forbidden Oasis, as you don't need to go there for the story.
  • You can't get everything that's there until you find all the shards.
  • It is worth visiting there once fairly early in the game to gather some resources that can help you in the future.

Fallow Mire

  • 8-10 (first visit)
  • 12-15
  • After the Hinterlands, some Inquisition soldiers go missing in Ferelden. Looking for them on the War Table unlocks the Fallow Mire location.
  • You may be concerned about your fellow Inquisition members, but it's dangerous, so you shouldn't travel there until you're at least level Eight.
  • Some areas are at a higher level that you may not be able to handle on your first visit.

Skyhold

  • 10
  • You head to Skyhold after completing the In Your Heart Shall Burn quest.
  • As Skyhold is a Home Base, once you get there, it doesn't matter what level you are. That said, you want to be around level 10 before doing the In Your Heart Shall Burn quest.

Crestwood

  • 10-13
  • You hear about Crestwood shortly after arriving at Skyhold. You can gain access to the place by completing the Find the Warden operation at the war table.
  • Everything on this map is around a similar level.

Western Approach

  • 10-14
  • The search for the Grey Wardens that started in Crestwood takes you to the Western Approach. You unlock it by investigating the place using the war table.
  • There isn't a big level difference between Crestwood and the Western Approach.

Exalted Plains

  • 10-16
  • You gain access to this area through the Silence of the Plains quest, which is acquired shortly after reaching Skyhold.
  • The starting level is similar to that of Crestwood and the Western Approach. However, there are some more difficult enemies in Exalted Plains.

Emerald Graves

  • 12-20
  • To get access to the Emerald Graves, you first must scout the area from the War Table as part of the Fairbanks' Trust side quest. You can do this shortly after reaching Skyhold.
  • While the recommended level to go to the Emerald Graves is 12, you may want to be a bit higher, as there are some high-level enemies on this map.

Emprise Du Lion

  • 16-22
  • You gain access to Emprise du Lion by completing the Liberate Emprise du Lion operation at the War Table. It becomes available shortly after reaching Skyhold.
  • It's best to wait until you're level 16 before venturing to this dangerous place.

Hissing Wastes

  • 19-23
  • Complete the Stop Venatori Activity in the West Operation from the War Table to be able to explore the Hissing Wastes.
  • It's the highest-level location in the game. You'd need to be at least level 16 to survive, but it's best to wait until you've reached level 19.
