Why Isn't My CSS ::first-letter Working on Inline Elements in Word-Generated HTML?

CSS ::first-letter Not Working

When attempting to apply CSS styles to inline elements within a Microsoft Word-generated HTML document, you may encounter issues with the ::first-letter selector. This selector is designed to target the first letter of block elements such as paragraphs and table cells, not inline elements like spans.

To overcome this limitation, either:

  • Apply ::first-letter to a Block Element:

    p::first-letter {font-size: 500px;}
  • Set Inline Element Display to Block:

    span {display: block;}
    p b span::first-letter {font-size: 500px !important;}

Remember, ::first-letter won't affect inline elements unless their display property is set to block or inline-block. This behavior stems from the fact that ::first-letter operates on block elements within which a first line can be defined.

Additional Considerations:

  • Avoid placing content before the first letter, as it could interfere with ::first-letter styling.
  • If you use :before with ::first-letter, it will style the :before content, not the actual first letter.
