So, you're doing the quest The Mysterious Shade in Path of Exile 2 and need to defeat Asinia, the Praetor's Consort. This is one of two bosses that you need to complete in order to progress through the Memorial Gate in the Cemetery of the Eternals.
If you are struggling to defeat Asinia, then we are here to help. In this guide, you can learn how to find and defeat this boss for the first time. Asinia can be defeated again, but you will only receive the key for The Mysterious Shade the first time you defeat this ghostly boss.
Asinia is found within the Tomb of the Consort. This is a structure found on the surface of the Cemetery of the Eternals. Once you find Asinia's tomb, you'll need to search the area until you find the boss arena.
The arena has a checkpoint directly near the entrance, and the actual place where you fight Asinia is a huge clearing, so it will be evident that you are where you need to be. On the map, you'll see a marker called Heart of the Tomb.
When you first arrive, Asinia won't be loitering around. Instead, just head to the center and the door-like hatch on the ground will open, with Asinia's spirit flying in. Shortly after this, Asinia will appear and the fight will begin.
The center of the arena will remain in ruins for the entire fight, so you won't be able to pass through.
Asinia is one of the early bosses in the game so she's not too difficult to take on. Additionally, her moveset is pretty simple. In order to prepare, we suggest just making sure that all of your passive skill points have been invested.
Additionally, be sure to have good equipment. At this point in the game, your gear will probably be all magic-tier (blue). This is fine, but if you find any better gear while making your way to Asinia, be sure to identify it and see if it's better than what you have currently.
At this point, we were level eight. The area level for the Tomb of the Consort is level nine, but it's still doable if you are the same level as we were.
Now, it's time to defeat Asinia! Let's look at her moveset below.
Attack |
Description |
Notes |
---|---|---|
Summon several circle AoEs on the ground | Asinia will summon these green circles that deal damage if you are caught within. | Asinia will say 'Rite of the Fourth Moon' when using this attack. These will appear in quick succession following you, but if you just run normally, you can avoid them all. |
Teleport to your location (and attack) | Asinia will momentarily disappear and then appear at your location. | When Asinia disappears, just keep moving to avoid her appearing on top of you. She may also say 'no escape' when using this. This will only really be difficult to deal with if you are standing still. |
Fire Projectiles in a fan | Asinia will quickly send out a burst of projectiles in a burst, which fan out and leave a mark on the ground. | Dodge-roll and run away when this happens; it's easy to avoid this attack. The attack itself doesn't do the most amount of damage, but it's best not to get hit. |
Fire Targeting Projectiles | Asinia will fire projectiles that target you. | These can cause the Hinder effect, which decreases your movement speed by 30%. She may also say 'Sacrificial Souls' when using this. There are a lot of projectiles here, so at this point, it's best to stop attacking and take a moment to flee. |
Summon Eternal Knight | Asinia will summon one add that will follow you and deal melee attacks. | The Eternal Knight can be annoying to deal with, especially if Asinia is firing a lot of projectiles. Try to deal with them first. Overall, they are pretty easy to take out. |
Create a Trapping Bone Circle | Asinia will create a bone circle on your location, and then fire a barrage of projectiles in the center. | If you are caught in the bone circle, you can break the walls and escape. If you're stuck in the circle, prepare for heavy damage that Asinia fires. You can try to avoid it by running around and dodge-rolling within the circle. |
Aid From Draven | Asinia will summon a ghostly shadow of Draven to deal a melee attack. | This is pretty easy to avoid. She may also call out to her love or state his name prior to using this. Draven will then appear and deal a melee attack disappearing. |
Based on her moveset above, you can definitely see that Asinia favors projectiles and targeting attacks. As such, it's absolutely essential to keep moving. You don't want to be trapped in any attack, as they can do quite a lot of damage.
Asinia doesn't summon a lot of adds; there is just one that you need to worry about, which is the Eternal Knight. Thankfully, they are easy to defeat, so you can do this quickly. Asinia will occasionally call to Draven to perform a melee attack, but this never posed an issue to us. More often than not, Draven was nowhere near our location.
The most challenging attack to deal with is the Bone Circle that Asinia summons around you. When trapped in the Bone Circle, Asinia will fire a barrage of projectiles in the center, dealing heavy damage. Fortunately, you are able to break the side of the circle with melee or AoE attacks. This allows you to slip out the side and move away.
While getting trapped in the circle doesn't sound ideal, it's a good way to essentially keep Asinia in one place for a short period of time. Here at TheGamer, we purposely got trapped and then broke out of the side. When this happens, Asinia will still cast the projectiles while standing still, creating a good opportunity to attack her.
Overall, Asinia is very vocal about her attacks. This makes it easy to learn and then predict her moves. We played as a Sorceress to defeat her, so ranged (and targeting) attacks really came in handy here. AoE skills can be helpful, but Asinia can be annoying to target since she moves around a lot.
Once Asinia has been defeated, be sure to pick up the key that she drops before heading through the portal back to the Cemetery. At this point, you will need to either defeat Draven, or head to Lachlann (if you've already defeated Draven). The key will stay in your inventory, so make sure to hold onto it for the final part of this quest.
