The Dragon Quest 3 Remake can be brutal if you aren't keeping up on acquiring the best gear that you can and grinding at least a little bit in between sections of the main quest. Brutal fights mean characters are probably going to die, but fret not, for it's not their end.
Party members can be revived in Dragon Quest 3 Remake, whether they're the main character or someone you've chosen to tag along with them. For the most part, character death is punishing during the battle but simply an inconvenience to fix once the dust settles.
How To Revive A Party Member In Battle
When a character falls dead in battle, a situation that was already bad is made significantly worse. While, usually, party members are going to be revived outside of battle, there are ways to pick them back up in battle; it's just going to take a turn, and sometimes, a little bit of luck, to do so. Fortunately, you have a few ways to do that.
Yggdrasil Leaf
The surefire way to breathe the breath of life back into a party member's lungs in the middle of the battle is to use a Yggdrasil Leaf. This is going to put them at full health and full MP.
This is going to be the best way to recover during a fight, especially for those fights that are back and forth and closely contested. For those fights where you feel hopelessly outmatched, you're probably only delaying the inevitable.
Yggdrasil Leaves are extremely hard to come by. Usually, you're just going to stumble into them by finding them in chests. So, don't use them at the drop of a hat; only use them when you can make the most of it.
Zin And Zing Spells
There are two spells that you can acquire that revive fallen party members: Zin and Zing. These two spells work slightly differently, with Zing being an upgraded version of Zin, albeit more expensive.
- Zin - Chance to revive a fallen party member at one HP.
- Zing - Higher chance to revive a fallen party member, and at half HP.
These spells both have some positives and negatives: on the one hand, Zin is considerably cheaper in MP cost than Zing. On the other hand, Zin is a lesser chance to revive your party member, meaning it might be a complete waste of a turn. In the middle of combat, that can be debilitating.
While these can be used during a fight, they're most useful outside of it. If Zin doesn't happen to revive someone when you're simply wandering around, you can just cast it until it does
Once you've got Zing unlocked, you may as well just use that spell; the increased cost of the spell is going to be made up for in healing. It essentially acts like a combination heal and revive. With a greater chance of working in the first place, the MP cost is a better investment.
Pay For A Resurrection At A Church
The other option available to you is resurrecting at a church. Just about every town or village has a church, and if they don't have a church proper, they have a Priest or a Nun wandering around somewhere that can fulfill the same function.
But it's going to cost you a little bit. While it isn't terribly expensive to resurrect fallen party members, coming in around 100 gold, it does increase every time you need to revive someone. In pretty much every situation, it's better to revive them with a spell and then rest at an inn to restore their health and MP.
That said, there are occasionally situations where your choices will be limited. The main character does learn the Zin skill, but if you're entirely out of MP and cannot restore it with items, resurrecting someone at a church might be your best bet.
However, in that case, you'll usually have an inn nearby. If you do, you can rest at the inn for a cheaper price than it would cost to resurrect at the church. That will restore your MP, and you can then use a spell to revive the fallen member afterward.
