Detroit to Accept Crypto for Tax Payments Starting in Mid-2025

Detroit will begin accepting cryptocurrency for tax payments in mid-2025, part of a larger plan to “modernize and enhance” payment methods for taxes and city services, city officials announced.
In a statement, the Detroit Office of Treasury said the city will soon accept crypto for taxes and other fees, as part of its strategy to “modernize” and attract blockchain companies.
On Nov. 7, the Detroit Treasury announced that mid-2025 will see the introduction of crypto payment options through a “secure payment platform managed by PayPal.”
While Detroit did not specify the cryptocurrencies it will accept, PayPal — which is handling the platform — does support a handful of major crypto assets, including Bitcoin, Ether, Bitcoin Cash, Litecoin, and PayPal USD.
The city of Detroit said that enabling crypto payments is part of a broader strategy to “modernize” its systems, improve operational efficiency, and grow blockchain businesses in the region.
“Detroit is building a technology-friendly environment that empowers residents and entrepreneurs. We are excited to be one of the first major U.S. cities to explore blockchain’s civic applications and allow residents to use their cryptocurrency as a payment option,” said Detroit Mayor Mike Duggan in a statement.
In addition to unveiling the new crypto payment options, Detroit is also inviting blockchain entrepreneurs to submit their ideas for “blockchain civic applications” to Justin Onwenu, the city's director of entrepreneurship and economic opportunity.

Those planning to pitch blockchain ideas for civic use cases in Detroit must submit their proposals via email by Dec. 15.
“Blockchain technologies have the potential to drive greater accessibility, efficiency, transparency, and security and we’re excited to hear from entrepreneurs at the forefront of this work,” said Onwenu.
By enabling crypto payments, Detroit will join other U.S. municipalities like Miami Lakes, Florida, and Williston, South Dakota, which have already adopted cryptocurrency for tax and city service payments.
Colorado and Louisiana have also integrated cryptocurrency for civic services, partnering with third-party payment services like PayPal or BitPay to facilitate the transactions.
The new initiative from Detroit comes three days after pro-crypto Republican Donald Trump was elected president. The crypto space is largely anticipating a pro-crypto environment and clearer regulations from the Trump administration, which could include the removal of SEC Chair Gary Gensler and the creation of a national Bitcoin reserve.
