JAXB package no longer exists in Java 11
Intro
When migrating from Java 8 to Java 11, users may encounter the compilation error "package javax.xml.bind does not exist." This error stems from the removal of the javax.xml.bind (JAXB) package in Java 11.
Cause
As per Java Enhancement Proposal (JEP) 320, Java 9 deprecated and Java 11 removed Java EE modules, including JAXB. This change was made to streamline Java's edition and ecosystem strategy.
Solution
To resolve the issue, you can use alternate versions of Java EE technologies by adding the following Maven dependencies to your project:
<code class="xml"><dependency> <groupid>javax.xml.bind</groupid> <artifactid>jaxb-api</artifactid> <version>2.3.0</version> </dependency> <dependency> <groupid>com.sun.xml.bind</groupid> <artifactid>jaxb-core</artifactid> <version>2.3.0</version> </dependency> <dependency> <groupid>com.sun.xml.bind</groupid> <artifactid>jaxb-impl</artifactid> <version>2.3.0</version> </dependency></code>
Jakarta EE 8 (Mar 2020) Update
You can also use Jakarta XML Binding from Jakarta EE 8:
<code class="xml"><dependency> <groupid>jakarta.xml.bind</groupid> <artifactid>jakarta.xml.bind-api</artifactid> <version>2.3.3</version> </dependency> <dependency> <groupid>com.sun.xml.bind</groupid> <artifactid>jaxb-impl</artifactid> <version>2.3.3</version> <scope>runtime</scope> </dependency></code>
Jakarta EE 9 (Nov 2020) Update
Jakarta EE 9 brought a newer release of the Jakarta XML Binding 3.0. To upgrade your build:
- Update Jakarta EE 9 API to jakarta.xml.bind-api
- Update compatible implementation to jaxb-impl version 3.0.0:
<code class="xml"><dependency> <groupid>jakarta.xml.bind</groupid> <artifactid>jakarta.xml.bind-api</artifactid> <version>3.0.0</version> </dependency> <dependency> <groupid>com.sun.xml.bind</groupid> <artifactid>jaxb-impl</artifactid> <version>3.0.0</version> <scope>runtime</scope> </dependency></code>
Note: jakarta.xml.bind requires Java 8 or later.
Jakarta EE 10 (Jun 2022) Update
Jakarta EE 10 brings the latest release of Jakarta XML Binding 4.0. To upgrade your build:
- Update Jakarta EE 10 API to jakarta.xml.bind-api
- Update compatible implementation to jaxb-impl version 4.0.0
<code class="xml"><dependency> <groupid>jakarta.xml.bind</groupid> <artifactid>jakarta.xml.bind-api</artifactid> <version>4.0.0</version> </dependency> <dependency> <groupid>com.sun.xml.bind</groupid> <artifactid>jaxb-impl</artifactid> <version>4.0.0</version> <scope>runtime</scope> </dependency></code>
Note: jakarta.xml.bind 4.0 requires Java SE 11 or later.

There are subtle differences in Java's performance on different operating systems. 1) The JVM implementations are different, such as HotSpot and OpenJDK, which affect performance and garbage collection. 2) The file system structure and path separator are different, so it needs to be processed using the Java standard library. 3) Differential implementation of network protocols affects network performance. 4) The appearance and behavior of GUI components vary on different systems. By using standard libraries and virtual machine testing, the impact of these differences can be reduced and Java programs can be ensured to run smoothly.
