The upgrade will address any bugs currently existing in the Proof-Of-Stake blockchain and ensure the blockchain runs efficiently and securely.

Pectra Upgrade: Boosting Ethereum’s Security and Scalability

Ethereum's latest upgrade, dubbed Pectra, is now set to launch in early 2025. Currently in its test net phase, the upgrade will include 10 Ethereum Improvement Proposals (EIPs).

At press time, the price of one Ethereum is $2,619.66, reflecting a 3.3% decrease over the past 24 hours. According to analysts, the launch of Pectra could have a significant impact on the price of Ethereum. For more details, check out the Ethereum prediction.

The upgrade will focus on addressing any remaining bugs in the Proof-Of-Stake blockchain to ensure that the blockchain runs efficiently and securely. It will also improve Ethereum's data availability capacity, which is essential for scalability. Lastly, the update aims to enhance some of the key pain points and user experience in the Ethereum infrastructure.

Due to the large number of EIPs, the upgrade is still in the test net phase, with developers and stakeholders working to identify any shortcomings and improve the user experience.

To accommodate the 10 EIPs, the developers have decided to split the Pectra upgrade into two hard forks. The first hard fork will concentrate on integrating eight EIPs that have already undergone testing on the developer net.

One of the most significant EIPs launching with Pectra is EIP 7251, which will increase the maximum effective balance of validators—the upper limit of the amount of ETH that can be staked for a reward—from 32 ETH to 2048 ETH. This upgrade will allow validators to be merged and significantly reduce the size of the network's validator set, which currently exceeds 1 million.

Additionally, the upgrade will also feature EIP 7549, which aims to optimize the performance of the client's software. Another EIP that will be included in the Pectra upgrade is EIP 6110, which will work on improving the deposit security and user experience of staking.

The success of this upgrade is critical to maintaining Ethereum's status as the leading blockchain platform, as it will help integrate Web3 into the ecosystem.

The update, which was initially planned to be a minor one, turned out to be the largest update yet, starting with 20 EIPs. While the main net is expected to be released in early 2025, the exact date will depend on the developers completing the scope of work and is subject to change. Despite facing some minor roadblocks, Pectra seems set to greatly improve Ethereum's decentralization and UX.
