What is Hacktoberfest?
Hacktoberfest is DigitalOcean's annual event that encourages people to contribute to open source during the month of October. Much of modern technology infrastructure — including some of DigitalOcean's products — relies on open source projects created and maintained by passionate people who often don't have the staff or budget to do much more than keep the project alive. Hacktoberfest is all about giving back to these projects, upskilling, and celebrating all things open source, especially the people who make open source so special.
By contributing, you will be helping to strengthen the open source community and contributing to the growth of projects that can impact millions of users!
How to Participate?
Participating in Hacktoberfest is simple. Follow these steps:
- Register on the official Hacktoberfest website. (between September 23rd and October 31st)
- Find open source repositories on GitHub or GitLab that are tagged with the hacktoberfest tag. You can also look for issues that accept contributions from beginners (good first issue).
- Try to submit four high-quality pull/merge requests between October 1st and October 31st, with project maintainers accepting your pull/merge requests so they count towards your total
- If your contributions are approved and accepted, you can earn a customizable digital Holopin badge that gains new features with each of your pull/merge requests. As each pull/merge request you submit is accepted by the maintainers, you will unlock a new level and customization for your badge, up to four pull/merge requests to complete Hacktoberfest .
Don't know where to start?
If you're new to open source contributions or looking for a good starting point, here are some tips:
- Contribute to documentation: Many projects need improvements to their documentation, and this is a great way to get started without having to dive head first into the code.
- Fix small bugs:Start with smaller issues. The community often labels these issues with tags like good first issue or beginner-friendly.
- Suggest improvements: Open source projects are often open to new ideas and improvements. If you find a way to optimize or improve the performance of a project, please create a PR!

Benefits of Participating
- Hone your skills: Participating in Hacktoberfest is a great way to learn new technologies and practice development in a collaborative environment.
- Networking: By contributing to open source projects, you can meet other developers around the world and even create valuable connections for your career.
- Get rewarded: In addition to contributing to the community, you will be gaining experience and building a good reputation for selection processes, where open source contributions are well regarded.
Tips for Contributing Successfully
- Read the project guidelines: Before making a PR, be sure to read and follow the contributions required by the repository.
- Be patient: Remember that open source project maintainers are volunteers, and it may take time for them to review your contribution.
- Be polite and collaborative: Contributing to open source involves working with other people. Always maintain clear and respectful communication with maintainers and other collaborators.
Let's Collaborate! ?
Now that you know everything about Hacktoberfest, what are you waiting for? Participate and help build the future of open source! Share your experiences, challenges and learnings with the dev community, and don't forget to celebrate your achievements!

JavaScript core data types are consistent in browsers and Node.js, but are handled differently from the extra types. 1) The global object is window in the browser and global in Node.js. 2) Node.js' unique Buffer object, used to process binary data. 3) There are also differences in performance and time processing, and the code needs to be adjusted according to the environment.

The main difference between Python and JavaScript is the type system and application scenarios. 1. Python uses dynamic types, suitable for scientific computing and data analysis. 2. JavaScript adopts weak types and is widely used in front-end and full-stack development. The two have their own advantages in asynchronous programming and performance optimization, and should be decided according to project requirements when choosing.

Whether to choose Python or JavaScript depends on the project type: 1) Choose Python for data science and automation tasks; 2) Choose JavaScript for front-end and full-stack development. Python is favored for its powerful library in data processing and automation, while JavaScript is indispensable for its advantages in web interaction and full-stack development.

Python and JavaScript each have their own advantages, and the choice depends on project needs and personal preferences. 1. Python is easy to learn, with concise syntax, suitable for data science and back-end development, but has a slow execution speed. 2. JavaScript is everywhere in front-end development and has strong asynchronous programming capabilities. Node.js makes it suitable for full-stack development, but the syntax may be complex and error-prone.

JavaScript can be used for front-end and back-end development. The front-end enhances the user experience through DOM operations, and the back-end handles server tasks through Node.js. 1. Front-end example: Change the content of the web page text. 2. Backend example: Create a Node.js server.

Choosing Python or JavaScript should be based on career development, learning curve and ecosystem: 1) Career development: Python is suitable for data science and back-end development, while JavaScript is suitable for front-end and full-stack development. 2) Learning curve: Python syntax is concise and suitable for beginners; JavaScript syntax is flexible. 3) Ecosystem: Python has rich scientific computing libraries, and JavaScript has a powerful front-end framework.
