Abysmal Zen 5 sales allegedly result in \'the worst launch since Bulldozer\'
When AMD launched the Zen 5-based Ryzen 9000 series CPUs in early August, the initial reception seemed quite cold. This was confirmed when the Zen 5 chips were discounted less than a month after release. However, at the time, the Ryzen 9000 processors were still new and nothing concrete could be said about the sales of the CPUs, as they can pick up over time. Sadly, the situation hasn't seemed to have improved.
Zen 5 sales are reportedly atrocious
Relaying information from one of his retail/distributor sources, Moore’s Law Is Dead claims that “Zen 5 is the worst launch since Bulldozer”, and the only customers actually buying the Ryzen 9000 chips are the ones who want the Ryzen 9 9950X for productivity workloads.
For those who don’t know, AMD Bulldozer was Team Red’s follow-up to the K10 architecture and a rival to the 2nd-gen Intel “Sandy Bridge” CPUs. Unfortunately, Bulldozer-based CPUs failed to make a dent in the market as the processors, among other issues, severely lacked in the single-threaded department vs the competing Intel parts.
Interestingly, MLID’s suggestion that the Zen 5 CPUs aren't selling well is reflected by the Newegg and Amazon “Best Sellers” list. On Newegg, there is not a single Zen 5 CPU in the top 20, while Amazon lists the Ryzen 9 9950X in the 28th place. So, it appears that the only Zen 5 chip that has seen some adoption is the Ryzen 9 9950X, and the rest of the lineup has failed to gain any traction.
MLID also reports that, due to the super weak reception, AMD distributors are getting tons of returns from retailers like Best Buy and Micro Center. The distributors are reportedly rejecting these returns. If true, this is going to result in an oversupply of the Ryzen 9000 chips which should, in theory, result in deep price cuts.
In short, Zen 5 CPU sales seem to be quite bad, as the chips failed to live up to the expectations of fans who were hoping for a bigger performance jump. So, with Intel Arrow Lake on the horizon, AMD needs to take some measures to make the Zen 5 processors appealing again. Whether those measures come in the shape of more SKUs, newRyzen 9000X3D chips, or price cuts, it remains to be seen.
