Alongside the Tecno Phantom V Fold 2, the clam-shell style Phantom V Flip 2 has also been announced. The new foldable arrives as a successor to the Phantom V Flip released in September 2023 and as a challenger to similar foldables such as the Motorola Razr 50(available on Amazon for $699) and the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 6.
The Tecno Phantom V Flip 2 brings some significant changes in design. The small round cover display has been replaced with a larger square one that Tecno calls ''ThruPool Cover Screen''. In addition, the rear cameras are stacked on top of each other with the cover display wrapped around them. Interestingly, the phone is a few millimeters thicker than its predecessor.
The new cover screen reportedly supports over 2000 apps, reducing the need to open up the main display. It also has support for a full keyboard, so users can dial numbers and reply to messages right on the cover screen. Along with the option to customize the cover display to reflect your personality, there are also a handful of mini-games including interactive virtual pets.
The Phantom V Flip 2 can be unfolded and positioned between angles 30-150°, allowing users to place the phone at various angles to take photos and shoot videos. The Phantom V Flip 2's cover display is 3.64 inches while the main display is a 6.9-inch 120Hz FHD LTPO AMOLED panel.
Tecno claims the crease in the main display has been kept to a minimum thanks to the water drop hinge. Made from aerospace-grade steel, the hinge has been tested to withstand 400,000 folds at normal temperature, 150,000 folds at a high temperature, and 100,000 folds at a low temperature.
Powering the Phantom V Flip 2 is a Dimensity 8020 processor paired with 8GB of RAM and 256GB of storage. The flip foldable also comes with new rear cameras. The primary camera is a 50MP 1/1.57” sensor, matched with a 50MP ultrawide angle camera. The front-facing camera remains a 32MP sensor with its own flash so you can take selfies even in low-light.
4The Tecno Phantom V Flip 2 also has a 4,720mAh battery capacity, an upgrade over the 4,000mAh battery capacity of the previous generation. It also charges faster at 70W, taking the battery from empty to full in 43 minutes. Sadly, there's no wireless charging. It does have dual SIM support, Wi-Fi 6, and Bluetooth 5.3.
Like the Phantom V Fold 2, the V Flip 2 runs Android 14 and comes with Tecno AI which has at its core the Gemini-powered AI assistant dubbed Ella. Users can ask the AI to change the wallpaper or switch to a different system language. The phone will also be able to summarize, generate, proofread, and rewrite texts.
The Tecno Phantom V Flip 2 is available in Moondust Grey and Travertine Green. It is priced at $699 and will be available in Africa, Southeast Asia, the Middle East, Latin America, and other unnamed regions. The first sale date is September 23, however, availability and pricing will vary for regions.
