Is it Preptember yet?

Good morning everyone and happy MonDEV ☕
We are back in full swing and one of the reasons why it's nice to return to the PC in September is Preptember!

Those who have been following the newsletter since the early days and those who follow the world of Open Source will already know, but in October there is an event that lasts a month, the Hacktoberfest; we could somewhat define it as the festival of Open Source if we want, inviting all us developers to seize the opportunity to make some more contributions to the open source world on which basically our entire career is based! ?

But not only: it is also an opportunity for those who have not yet approached this world to get involved and secure the first "Good first issue" assigned, since at this time of year they are popping up!

In fact, if you are a maintainer of some project, small or large it may be, this could also be a good time for you to find new contributors to your idea! ?

Someone might object "Yes okay, but we're talking about October, we're still in September, right?" And here comes into play what we were talking about at the beginning: Preptember! September is the right time to prepare, find the projects you want to contribute to, or prepare your project for external contributions.

In the coming weeks, I will share some resources on this, hoping to help you find that right advice or that right repo that will lead you to contribute to the open source world!

But let's start right away, with a very short tool for this week, so we don't digress too much!

Just these days, Nuno Maduro, a figure certainly known to Laravel enthusiasts, has made pinkary.com Open Source, a portal that aims to bring together all your links in one place and make them easily reachable. They have also added a Twitter-like board where you can share thoughts with other users.

Are there other similar tools? Yes, but today I want to propose this one for a few main reasons:

  • The tool is completely open source and open to contributions
  • It is very recent, so rich in activity and it is easy to be included in the workflow
  • Also because it is recent, it is not yet overcrowded with contributors
  • It is in PHP and ?? Unfortunately, compared to other languages, the number of OS projects in PHP is quite low, so I am really happy to propose you a project of the good little elephant for once

Having said that, I leave you to this week's articles! Will you try to use Pinkary and participate in the Hacktoberfest? Let me know, I am very curious

Articles of the week

  • Preptember: Preparing for a Successful Hacktoberfest: how can we not start with an article that talks to you in more detail about Preptember? If you are interested in taking part in this event, this is a must-read

I wish you all a good start to the week, happy reading and as always,

Happy Coding! 0_1
