Exciting budget gamer: Ryzen 5 7600X3D thrashes Ryzen 5 9600X with double-digit lead in gaming

Emulating the launch of the Ryzen 5 5600X3D, AMD released the Ryzen 5 7600X3D on August 30 as a Micro Center exclusive. This is a rather limited release as the CPU is only available through select Micro Center retail locations and only with bundled motherboard and RAM.

So, even though the Ryzen 5 7600X3D has a price of $299 which is in line with our report from late last month, you’ll have to shell out more for the whole motherboard/RAM package.

Regardless of how you feel about the short supply, the Ryzen 5 7600X3D appears to be a beastly 6-core gaming champ as shown by the limited testing done by Tom’s Hardware.

Before we move on to discuss the benchmarks, It is worth mentioning that all the CPUs used in the comparison were tested on Windows 11 23H2, an update that boosts the performance of AMD CPUs. Additionally, AMD Ryzen chips were also using an Expo memory overlock to DDR5-6000.

Ryzen 5 7600X3D benchmark

The Ryzen 5 7600X3D shined in Tom’s Hardware gaming tests, especially when compared with the competing 6-core Ryzen 5 9600X (Available on Amazon).

Across the entire set of the tested titles, the average performance of the Ryzen 5 7600X3D beat all the other chips in the comparison except for the Ryzen 7 7800X3D. This includes Zen 5-based Ryzen 5 9600X and the Ryzen 7 9700X.

Looking at the numbers, the Ryzen 5 7600X3D managed an average FPS of 160 at 1080p paired with an RTX 4090. Only the Ryzen 7 7800X3D was faster with 175 FPS, while much more expensive chips like the Core i9-14900K and the Ryzen 7 9700X fell short of the latest Zen 4 X3D chip.

Similarly, the 6-core Ryzen 5 9600X earned 144 FPS, making the Ryzen 5 7600X3D 11.11% faster.

With an 11.11% better average FPS at a 7% higher price, the Ryzen 5 7600X3D is clearly a better deal than the Ryzen 5 9600X which only brings a marginal gaming performance improvement over the Ryzen 5 7600X (Available on Amazon).

Put simply, if you are looking for a cost-effective 6-core AMD CPU that has excellent gaming performance, the Ryzen 5 7600X3D appears to be a true budget champ. Of course, this is only true if you can get your hands on the chip. For folks who can’t, your only real choices are to either take a performance hit with the cheaper Ryzen 5 9600X or spend about $60 more to get the 8-core Ryzen 7 9700X.
