A supermarket shopper has gone viral after sharing a video suggesting we've all been using self-checkout machines wrong.

Most of us just tap our cards or phones and head straight to the self checkout kiosks, leaving any coins sitting around at home gathering dust because it's just too time consuming to spend them.

Well, this trick is targeted at those wishing to offload that loose change quickly.

The TikTok video posted by @Wicked_boss_babe could well save you a lot of time at the checkout.

There's lots of quality news coming out of the US .

The clip is captioned: "Was today years old when I learned this". It adds: "How I've been doing it," as someone feeds coins into the machine one at a time through the narrow slot.

They then reveal "How you should do it", which sees the coin flap lifted up to reveal a far larger hole hidden underneath, where the customer throws in entire handfuls of coins in one go.

The video instructs: "You can add change until the green arrow goes off. Then wait for it to count," reports the Irish Mirror.

The clip has garnered over five million views and appears to have been filmed in a US Walmart store, prompting UK viewers to question if the same trick could be used in their local shops.

A Tesco employee responded by filming a video at the self-checkout machines, successfully lifting the coin slot cover as demonstrated in the original video.

Some folks were gobsmacked by the revelation, with one person writing: "This could have saved me a lot of time with my $3 worth of pennies." Another said: "Nahhh we've been struggling for no reason."

But there's always one to rain on your parade, as a naysayer chimed in with a warning: "DON'T DO THIS the cover was put on there to stop the coins being jammed. People like you will be the ones complaining when it miscounts your money."

And then there was the one who perfectly echoed the cashless society woes, saying: "I can't remember the last time I used a coin to pay for anything."
