Retroid Pocket 5 confirmed to grace retro gaming handheld market with 1080p and AMOLED display

Retroid continues to offer up new information about its next gaming handhelds at a rate of knots. While it only recently announced the Pocket Mini, it has already shifted focus to the Pocket 5. Given that the company has not released either yet, it seems that the Pocket Mini and Pocket 5 could debut simultaneously, or at least within a few weeks of each other.

Until now, Retroid had merely shown what parts of the Pocket 5 look like. However, it has now revealed specifications for the display that will help underpin the device. As the image below shows, Retroid has chosen an AMOLED panel, which would be a significant upgrade over the IPS panels that grace the Pocket 4 and Pocket 4 Pro (curr. $237.49 on Amazon). The AMOLED panel will be larger and higher resolution than the 4.7-inch and 750p (1,344 x 750) panel in the Pocket 4 series, though.

Specifically, Retroid claims to have built the Pocket 5 around a 5.5-inch display that outputs at 1080p with a 16:9 aspect ratio. As a result, this puts the Pocket 5 on a collision course with the AYANEO Pocket Air that arrived last year for $279. Incidentally, while AYANEO suggested that it would release a Snapdragon-powered version of the Pocket Air as Retroid has with the Pocket 5, the device was only ever available with MediaTek's Dimensity 1200. Thus, we suspect that the Retroid Pocket 5 will be more powerful than AYANEO's existing gaming handheld, whenever it actually arrives.
