The Windows 11KB5041587 update that dropped on August 27 for users of Preview builds is now available for all as an optional update. The update includes a number of bug fixes for all users, but those running an AMD Ryzen chipset will see a small, yet measurable performance jump. Testing data gathered from the community by AMD points to an average 10% improvement in some games and applications for Zen 5 users.
The data provided by AMD shows Far Cry 6 running 13% faster on the new software. Cyberpunk 2077, meanwhile, sees a 7% improvement in FPS. Interestingly, there's no notable improvement in the Cinebench Single-Core benchmark. All of the benchmark data came from machines running Zen 5, the architecture found in the newest AMD hardware. Even those looking for slightly faster and more efficient day-to-day performance may do well to download this update, as indicated by a roughly 6% jump in the Procyon Office benchmark, which uses simulated operations in the Microsoft Office suite. According to AMD, systems running Zen 4 and Zen 3 hardware will still see some performance improvement, but it will be more modest.
There are some small feature improvements on board; users will see new options in Windows Share, and the Narrator feature can now scan larger documents more efficiently. This update also includes a few bug fixes, ranging from incredibly minor to showstopping. Users who have had issues with their laptops not wanting to resume from going to sleep have a fix in this package. There's also a fix for the system hanging when using symlinks. A memory leak fix in the IME Editor, a fix for a BitLocker problem that keeps users from decrypting drivers, and a few more minor tweaks round out the package.
The update is available for all users on 22H2, 23H2, and 24H2. To download it, go into Windows Update in the settings menu and check for updates manually. This will bring up any optional updates that haven't been taken on the host system yet, and this update should be among them.
