[Interview] Team Jade, creators of 'Delta Force: Hawk Ops.” Aiming for games that everyone can enjoy [gamescom]

As of August 2024, the development team “Team Jade” of TiMi Studio Group is conducting alpha testing for the new FPS “Delta Force: Hawk Ops” (PC / PS5 / Xbox Series X|S / iOS / Android) I was able to have an interview at the gamescom 2024 venue.
The partners are executive producer Leo Yao and director Shadow.

"Delta Force: Hawk Ops" is a tactical FPS that is basically free to play.
As for how it came to be, a manufacturer called NovaLogic developed the first game "Delta Force" in 1998, and although nine works in the series were released until "Delta Force Xtreme 2" in 2009, the original development team went out of business. As a result, no new work has been released in the past 15 years. That IP was acquired by TiMi Studio Group, and developed by internal studio Team Jade, which already had a track record with "Call of Duty Mobile."

It was announced at gamescom 2024 that the early access version will be launched in the fourth quarter of 2024 (between October and December), and that an early access eve will be held on Steam in conjunction with the Steam Next festival in October. A playable demo will be released.

The store page has already received more than 1 million wishlists, and considering that many people have already experienced the alpha version, we expect early access to be quite popular.

I heard that the alpha test for "Delta Force: Hawk Ops" is going well.
Mr. Leo Yao (hereinafter referred to as Mr. Yao):

I agree. The response has been very positive, and we are feeling the response as well. Many people have commented on the high quality of the game, and some seem to think it's a near-finished version, but in reality, that's not the case, and it's still in the stage of being refined. Also, we are often featured by streamers, and as far as I know, I was able to contact 600 people. I am honored that famous Japanese people have talked about my work.

4Gamer：

What did you learn from the alpha test?
Mr. Yao:

Currently, this game features two types of extraction modes: ``Hazard Operations'' and large-scale team battles ``Havoc Warfare''. We have been testing the game in China for a while now, and what surprised us was that ``Chinese gamers enjoy playing team battles'' and ``Many Western gamers enjoy PvP.''

　ええ。でも考えてみると，欧米では過去20年にわたり「Call of Duty」や「Battlefield」といったFPSがトレンドのメインストリームでした。そのため，現代人気の高いエッセンスを取り入れたゲームモードが支持されているのかなと考えています。
　一方，中国では昔からFPS人気がそれほど高くはありませんでしたが，「Delta Force」シリーズに関しては昔遊んでいたゲーマーが多かったので，大規模なチーム対戦に回帰している人が多いのだと思われます。こうした下地の違いが，モードの好みを分けたのでしょう。

4Gamer：
　ビジネスとして考えた場合，どちらかに人気や開発リソースが偏りかねない状況を改善しようとはされますか？

ヤオ氏：
　難しいところではありますが，つまるところDelta Force: Hawk Opsの魅力を感じてもらえればいいですし，そのためにキャンペーンモードを含めて複数の遊び方を提供するので，まずは現状で進めます。
　もちろん，より多くの人たちに隅々まで楽しんでもらうための試行錯誤は，今後も，そしてローンチ後も続けていく予定です。

4Gamer：
　本作はF2Pということで，さまざまな層のゲーマーが参加するはずですが，メインターゲットはコア層としているのでしょうか。

シャドウ氏：
　当初からコア層をターゲットにするということはありません。オンラインPvPやガンスミス機能などに慣れていない人には，確かに学習の時間が必要なデザインですが，どんな遊び方にも対応できるよう調整していきますので，とりあえずプレイしてみてほしいです。

4Gamer：
　ゲームマップはわりとオープンな中東世界ですが，Hazard OperationsとHavoc Warfareではデザインがかなり異なりますよね。

シャドウ氏：
　そうですね。Hazard Operationsに関してはとくにサイズ面を加味したマップデザインを心がけました。スローペースでバトルが進展していくぶん，イベントやゲーム体験，例えばシークレットをあちこちに散りばめていくといったチューンアップを随所に盛り込んでいます。
　Havoc Warfareについては，1つ1つのマップに色濃くアイデンティティを設定しています。フラットな砂漠風景のマップから，バンテージポイントとして使える岩山や建物があるマップ。いくつかは過去作のオマージュとしてリメイクしたものもあります。
　マップが広いほどデザイン面で遊べる空間も多いので，遠距離から至近距離まで多面的なバトルを楽しめるよう工夫しています。

4Gamer：
　お話を聞いていると，キャンペーンモードを含めて3つの異なるゲームを作っているようなもんですよね（笑）。

シャドウ氏：
　そのとおりで（笑），3つのゲームを作っている気分です。
　本作はローンチ後，何年にもわたる長期運営でゲーマーの皆さんにプレイし続けてもらいたいと考えています。まずは我々の強みであるF2Pのサービスやマルチプレイモードのデザインを優先していますが，時間経過とともに異なる角度から自由に遊んでいただければ本望です。

4Gamer：
　ディレクターとして，プロジェクトで苦労したことはなんでしょう。

シャドウ氏：
　そうですねえ。開発がはじまったころは銃器のハンドリングやカスタマイズ機能を優先して，そこからビルトアップしていく手法を取っていたのですが，それがうまくいかなかったことでしょうか。
　マルチプレイではなにが求められるのか。対してシングルプレイ用のキャンペーンは必要なのか。そして本作をさまざまな観点からプレイされるプレイヤーの皆さんの旅路を，どのようにサポートできるのか。いろいろと協議を重ねたことを思い出せます。
　先ほど3つのゲームを作っている気分だと言いましたが，まさに“異なるゲーム性の3つの柱を，どのようにして1つにまとめられるか”という部分に，けっこうな労力を使ってきた気がします。

4Gamer：
　ヤオさんは海外メディアで「今はお金を稼ぐことに集中していない」というようなことをおっしゃってましたが，それでもF2Pの戦略は成功するとお考えでしょうか？

ヤオ氏：
　そうだと願っています。我々はF2Pという形で，以降のコンシューマ版も含めて，より多くのプレイヤーに「Delta Force: Hawk Ops」の楽しさを理解していただければと考えています。おそらく今冬にはキャンペーンモードに関する具体的な情報もお伝えできると思いますよ。
