Tesla is now shipping the Cybertruck with two wheel sets, and the new Core Wheels and covers kit with all-season tires keeps pushing out range records.
Initially, the Cybertruck came with the stock Cyber Wheels that offer futuristic protruding Aero Coversand Goodyear Wrangler Territory RT Light Truck LT285/65R20 all-terrain tires. Some owners are now also getting the Core Wheels set that comes with Pirelli Scorpion ATR all-season tires of the same size and more orthodox covers.
While the Core Wheel covers may not look as futuristic as the ones on the Cyber Wheels, the Cybertruck with the all-season Pirellis is rated for 22 more miles of official EPA range estimate on Tesla's website. As the lead Cybertruck engineer Wes Morrill explains, it shouldn't come as a surprise that the all-season tires offer less resistance and better efficiency than the all-terrain tires.
Cybertruck owners who have the Core Wheels set, however, notice an even more remarkable range distance advantage before the Cyber Wheels. In mixed city and highway driving, the Cybertruck with Core Wheels set notched a battery consumption efficiency of304 Wh per mile. This already means a longer range than Tesla's own official estimate with the Core Wheels, but in the city driving session the Cybertruck managed to return an even better, 286 Wh/mile efficiency from the all-season Pirelli tires.
Technically, these numbers would mean up to 432 miles on a charge from the 123 kWh battery pack, but the Cybertruck owner has a more realistic, 370–400 miles range calculation. That is still at least 30 more miles than the official EPA estimate with the Cybertruck's Core Wheels, though.
The tires are custom-made for the Cybertruck with its logo on the side, Pirelli's "Elect" EV symbol, and a "construction which balances handling and efficiency while also reducing road noise," as per Mr. Morrill.
If that range increase with the all-season Pirelli tires holds water over multiple trips and a longer timeframe, Tesla's promised 500-mile Cybertruck may become a reality when it launches the 50 kWh Range Extenderbattery pack that goes in the truck's bed.
The $16,000 extender option is scheduled for release early next year, and could add more than its official 130 miles to a Cybertruck with the Core Wheels set, pushing the overall range beyond the coveted 500-mile mark even.
Tesla's former battery division head is on record saying that the long-term goal for the Cybertruck's range is to hit 500 miles with the extender, and Tesla might get there sooner than anticipated.
