Solusi MySQL Error Cannot Start

Aug 19, 2024 am 11:04 AM

Hello friends, in this post I want to share a tutorial for dealing with MySQL 8.0 which won't start when you upgrade to MySQL 8.0

Error that occurred

Well, this error occurred when I was upgrading from MySQL 5.1.72 to MySQL 8.0.32 in the Laragon application.

Errors that occur like this, when I Start All in the Laragon application.

Solusi MySQL Error Cannot Start

MySQL 8.0 Error in Laragon

Then I checked the log file located at C:Laragondatamysql-8mysqld.log

There I found an error like the following

mysqld: Table 'mysql.plugin' doesn't exist
2023-02-16T23:34:54.041942Z 0 [ERROR] [MY-010735] [Server] Could not open the mysql.plugin table. Please perform the MySQL upgrade procedure.

Apart from that, I also found an error like this

2023-02-16T23:34:54.460889Z 0 [ERROR] [MY-010326] [Server] Fatal error: Can't open and lock privilege tables: Table 'mysql.user' doesn't exist
2023-02-16T23:34:54.462984Z 0 [ERROR] [MY-010952] [Server] The privilege system failed to initialize correctly. For complete instructions on how to upgrade MySQL to a new version please see the 'Upgrading MySQL' section from the MySQL manual.

From this error it is clear that the upgrade process I did was wrong. The mistake was that I didn't initialize MySQL 8.0 first, which caused MySQL 8.0 not to find the table I needed.

Solution: Initialize MySQL

Okay, so the solution we will do is to initiate MySQL 8.0 first before we start the MySQL server.

Open a command prompt in Windows, then run the following command

mysqld --initialize-insecure

Actually there are 2 options, the first uses –initialize the second –initialize-insecure. The only difference is the password for the root account. The first option will generate a temporary random password. For the second option, the root account does not have a password, but later we can set a password for root.

Okay, the process for initiating MySQL 8.0 is complete, it should be here that MySQL 8.0 can be started or the server can be run without any more errors.

Change Root Password

Because we used the second option, this means the root account does not have a password, so it can easily be accessed without using a password. If it's on a local computer, it's still okay, because web development needs are faster too.

But if friends want to add a password for the root account, it's very easy.

First run the following command to enter the MySQL command line.

mysql -u root

After logging in, run the following command. Don't forget the last semicolon.

ALTER USER 'root'@'localhost' IDENTIFIED BY 'password_baru_untuk_root';

Change new_password_for_root with the password you want. Then enter.

Now run the command exit to exit the MySQL command line. Then run the following command. Then enter the new password that you created earlier.

mysql -u root -p

Good luck ?

MySQL: String Data Types and CollationsMySQL: String Data Types and CollationsMay 09, 2025 am 12:08 AM

The string data types in MySQL include CHAR, VARCHAR, BINARY, VARBINARY, BLOB, and TEXT. The collations determine the comparison and sorting of strings. 1.CHAR is suitable for fixed-length strings, VARCHAR is suitable for variable-length strings. 2.BINARY and VARBINARY are used for binary data, and BLOB and TEXT are used for large object data. 3. Sorting rules such as utf8mb4_unicode_ci ignores upper and lower case and is suitable for user names; utf8mb4_bin is case sensitive and is suitable for fields that require precise comparison.

The best MySQLVARCHAR column length selection should be based on data analysis, consider future growth, evaluate performance impacts, and character set requirements. 1) Analyze the data to determine typical lengths; 2) Reserve future expansion space; 3) Pay attention to the impact of large lengths on performance; 4) Consider the impact of character sets on storage. Through these steps, the efficiency and scalability of the database can be optimized.
